I think Puyol is a weak link currently for Barcelona. The way falcao just turned him and ran to the goal for the first goal of atletico just shows that he no longer has the legs to play at the top level. Of course defending is not all about pace but obviously when facing a counter attacking side like Real with Ronaldo on the side their CBs will have to out pace the strikers at least a few time.

I hope sanchez starts. we have a shot at a clean sheet then varane was rested for the game vs and albiol subbed early. they look guaranteed to play. mr average wss also rested, but what I dont understand is why marcelo sat through the whole game HELLOO he only has a half under his belt and he has been back for a while.

I'd rather play Albiol than Carvalho he's too slow to play in the high line we'd be playing against Barcelona. I hope Ronaldo restores Barcelona to top of his favourite teams he scores against they are currently joint second with Aston Villa and only one goal behind Getafe, who he's scored 11 goals against.

Varane is not better than Puyol, let's make that clear first. Puyol is a living legend and is still class. In my opinion Puyol is one of the best defenders the game has ever seen and his achievements in the game support my argument.

About the game, Madrid are the clear underdogs here. Very inconsistent performances throughout the season. Will be an interesting game.

Puyol was great for just a couple of seasons, I don't buy how he's one of the greatest in history, I remember clearly how much of a liability he was in Barcelona's treble season so much so that he was dropped for the second leg against Chelsea and only came back on when Marquez who was also having a terrible game also got substituted due to injury.

He gained some form for a few season, but in the few Barcelona matches I've watched this season he's clearly past it and is being carried by the team, I'd be surprised if he starts against Real Madrid on Wednesday, It's more likely Mascherano would start ahead of him.

I hate player comparisons, Varane hasn't achieved anything in football yet, luckily he doesn't allow hype to get to him, but on current form, I'd take him over Puyol anyday.

I rate puyol very highly. As do many other posters here.
Current form? Still a great defender, I mean I don't really keep up but i do know he was injured from a bit of time then fell again due to another injury.

But that doesn't take away from what the guy has done/accomplished. Varane is great and hopefully over time he can provide the same type of impact for us.

Puyol's actually been pretty solid this season, he's looked like his old self. He's ahead of Mascherano in the pecking order.

In terms of Varane vs Puyol, Varane is probably better at certain things than Puyol, however at the moment Puyol's better. I think Varane has the potential to be as good as Puyol, if not better.

Why is this even being discussed?

Puyol is clearly better than Varane right now, and everyone is aware that Varane is very talanted for a 19 year old. That's it.

The way we speak about Varane I fear that the GL jinx may happen to him.

I don't believe in jinxes, you should be free to express your opinions without fearing jinxing because at the end of the day, it is what it is - just an opinion.

I repeat Varane is NOT better than Puyol but if I had a choice to pick between the two for a match in three days time, I'd pick the teenage Frenchman over the 34 year old whose best days are clearly behind him and no I'm not talking about Carvalho.

Marcelo is still a doubt for the match I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't start. It's very likely that Arbeloa would play leftback and Essien right back but Mourinho may have a ace up his sleeve.
