From those videos you can see that he already did those forays when he was still with Schalke. And IIRC, he never got a red card so far, that is, he is well able to correctly time his tackles for years now.

Which makes it more disappointing that Franz Beckenbauer says things like he was "lucky" and should "stay in goal" vs France.

Neuer knows what he is doing and with all due respect to the Kaiser, what exactly does he know about goalkeeping than Neuer doesnt?

I'm actually more disappointed about Oliver Kahn saying that Neuer's pro-active goalkeeping is "harakiri" as he should know better.

I actually didnt hear that, indeed that is disappointing.

My only excuse would be those guys, even Khan, come from a different era of football and therefore in Khan's case a different era of goalkeeping.

In Khan's days, playing with a line as high as Germany's now never happened. Not with a team he played on anyway.

I also sense a small touch of jealousy, because Khan for all his qualities would never be able to do what Neuer is doing now in this aspect.

*grin* For some reason my thoughts were similar - that Oliver Kahn would have loved to do something like that, but he probably wasn't fast enough and his coaches would have crucified him for such ventures as it just wasn't done that way during his time (I guess the Toni Schumacher incident probably came into it as well).

Which reminds me, I would love to know Manuel Neuer's sprint top speed - he was amazingly fast for a player who's not a winger or the like.

Same here, I would like to know that too.

For his height and weight especially, its amazing how mobile he is.

Oh thanks! Hm. "Only" 22.4km/h? Looks how easily one can be deceived by just watching on TV. I would have thought he should have been faster when racing against one or the other of the attackers.

No, he clearly isnt.

After they clocked Robben at 37 and then dropped it back to 30-31, I dont understand how these things happen.

Not saying 22 is wrong for Neuer, but when he had to race up against Slimani for a good 5 steps..I find it hard to believe Slimani (30) is 8 KMH faster.

I think they can only get more or less correct speed calculations when the players carry a GPS chip around, but I doubt they do that during the match. Which reminds me - with military precision GPS (or Galileo) coordinates, they actually could set up an automated offside detection system, too.
