Innovation vs Success
Do you guys think the better coach is the one that innovates his own idea and own style of football but does not have a lot of success to his name. ex- Zeman.
Or someone who didn't necessarily innovate his own ideas but has a lot of success to his name and has won many trophies ex- Mourinho
So question is do you guys grade coaches on their ideas or success. What do you personally think. I actually would grade a coach on his success. (trophies, win %)
Want a good and civilized debate boys.

Re: Innovation vs Success
considering this sport is about winning, the answer, to me, is obvious.
A successful coach is a coach you want.
A successful coach is a coach you want.

If the innovation bring success then that is valid. However, if the innovation does not help you achieve your goals, then that is a failed innovation.
Innovation with success >> Success with conventional methods.

It's the same thing.

football is a results business, if your not getting results then your not doing a good job, regardless of how your going about it

Re: Innovation vs Success
It depends really. I mean when people think of WC 1970 most people think of Netherland, even though Germany won, or 1982 when most people think of Brazil, even though they didnt even make it to the semi-finals...
Another example is there are players who have won more than Maradona and Cruyff yet are not even remotly close to be considered as good as they are.. Theres more than just winning alot of trophies to be a great..

Re: Innovation vs Success
imo there is no such thing as inovation in football anymore. the game has been played long enough. all the styles and all the formations have been explored, you just need to look into the history of the game to find that particular style.
what it comes down to for me is success, winning trophies, and win %. thats what people will remember most.
if a coach can achieve that with an aesthetic free-flowing style then that will be remembered more than the same level of success but less aesthetic.

Re: Innovation vs Success
At the base of it all, football is about winning. Innovation is obviously nice but in this modern age, with the amount of money won and lost, managers are now more pressed to deliver results. In the current footballing climate, success is by far the better and the more attainable of the two.
