Wigan Athletic. Won an FA cup with a team that cost less than £15 million. The winning goal was scored by a player who cost just £2 million

............ok so they're not THAT successful. But I doubt you'll find a trophy won on a smaller budget than that

low budget also includes wages, so we can rule out most big clubs

All time or currently?

All time must be Cloughs Notingham Forest, taking a provincial team and winning European Cups and league trophies, amazing achievments.

Olympique Lyon also deserves a mention, it used to be a sleepy second division club until it got new management and won 5 leagues or so in a row.

There are big overachievers at the bottom rungs, however overachieving at the very top is harder and should be mentioned as a greater achievment.

If Liverpool manage to win the Premier League this season its going to go down as an extremely good achievment considering they are only 5th place or so on the wage league.

Arsenal under Wenger overachieved by very big margins when he was new to the Premier League, since them everyone else has catched up to him on his secrets and he only moderately overachieves these days by a position or two, right now they're about par on what they actually spend.

Manchester United under Ferguson overachieved for many years, especially since the arrival of the Oil rich sugar daddy clubs...

Spurs did pretty good for awhile, Everton under Moyes did better than expected most seasons...
If Liverpool win the title.

Barca CL victory 2011.

€40M €0 €0

€ 15M €0 €0M €36M

Thats only conveniently ignoring that Barca pays (payed?) the highest wages in all professional sport teams.

Recently I would say Borussia Dortmund 2010-11. Basically a whole bunch of youngsters no-one had heard of.

And FC Porto 2005 Champions league.

Well, it is always relative. In CL/EL, you could say FC Basel 1893, while if you look at the RSL they are by far the richest club.

Man Utd have spent a lot under Ferguson.I could've sworn i saw a graphic where Utd's expenditure in the past years equal's that of City's.

Plus Utd operate(d) on a high wage bill anyways.

You probably find the best low budget success stories from smaller leagues.

Also, clubs like Swansea, who win promotion from the second level to the top level, when there's a big gap in revenue between those divisions like there is between the Championship and the Premier League, and then comfortably stay up in their first season in the big league, achievements like these are pretty great. And they won the League Cup last year, too. Although an even greater achievement was probably that of Bradford's, being the runners-up.

Not? Their squad worth is minute when compared to ManUtd, Spurs, Chelsea, Zenit etc and still they managed to collect quite some skalps, getting as far as the EL semi final last year.

Fluking the odd win here and there against a bigger European does not define success.

They spent alot but the recent Chelsea and City always outspent him. Ferguson managed to do alot with his admitedly expensive squad, he got pretty lucky sometimes on finding amazing players here and there, but of course he always took promise and talent and led them to glory.

Also, i wouldn´t look too much into good CL runs, unless they become consistent. Going deep into the Champions League can be just a sheer roll of the dice many times.

villarreal back in the day

generally though, no shoestring team will ever have any success in a 38-game season, you need quality depth for that... maybe they can pull off the occasional cup upset but that's about it

I was thinking them myself. May not have won anything, but they mixed with the big spenders for a while under Pellegrini.

manchester ? overachieved?

if anything, there are instances of underachievement.

manchester spent more than 130 million euros in 2001-2002 .
arsenal spent less than 1/3 of that and managed to win the league.

again in 2003-2004, they spent twice arsnal's budget and only managed to finish third.

Did a little research on Dortmund squad of 2011/12, i checked most important player's transfer fees, and :

Weidenfeller-0 m
Hummels- 4 m
Subotic - 2.5 m
Łukasz Piszczek- 0 m
Felipe Santana- 2 m
Schmelzer - 0 m
Blaszczykowski -3.7 m
Kagawa - 2.5 m
Gundogan -6.5 m
Gotze - 0 m
Lewandowski -4.5 m
Sebastian Kehl -3.2 m
Kevin Großkreutz -1.2 m
Sven Bender - 1.2 m

If i'm not mistaken with my mental calculus we get a shocking amount of 31.3 millions squad, for the Bundesliga winners in that season and future Cl finalists ... Laughing

I don't think think this is even comparable with Wigan or other small budget success recently...

Bolton Wanderers from 2005-07. Finished 6th in 05-06 to qualify for the UEFA cup for the first time ever. Then reaching the last 32 in the UEFA cup staying unbeaten in the group stages and eventually losing 2-1 on aggregate to a Ribery inspired Marseilles.

Season 06-07 finished 7th, got to the last 16 of the UEFA cup with some historic games along the way. Being the first British team to beat red star Belgrade in Belgrade, a hugeeeee 2-2 draw with bayern Munich at bayern's ground unbeaten in the group stages again. Round of 32 beating atletico 1-0 at home and drawing 0-0 in Spain to knock out the Spanish club and eventually getting knocked out themselves vs Porto in the round of 16.

Picking up free and cheap players such as Hierro, Campo, Stelios, diouf among loads of others.

Not bad for a poor little team in Lancashire.

Where is Reus? He is a Dortmund youth product but they bought him back for 17 million...
