football is only relevant from the 1970s when total football was created and the offside rule was introduced. anything that happened before that doesn't matter. so who cares about pele and who cares about madrid's 6 european cups.

I care about Pele, and so does many football fans, Brazilians, and many nationalities that consider him a sporting icon. Saying that football before the 1970 was irrelevant is not an argument. And the Brazilian 1970 team played in what you call 'total football' but since total football have always been a south American way of playing, no bothered to brand it.

Second, trophies are a team effort, and I fail to see your point exactly.

Third, this thread is not about Messi, and he can't compare because HE STILL HAVE NOT FINISHED HIS CAREER.

Fourth, you also fail to mention that two of those trophies for Pele are WORLD CUPS.

Finally, this fact does not belittle any of those legends because trophies are not THE only standing factor in such a debate.

Firstly I was speaking about club trophies.

Secondly all football trophies are team effort, national level competitions doesn't make it any more individual.

I thought this thread was about facts, was just giving those, Messi @ 23 beats Pele @ 23 in club trophies.

Again, Brazilian league had less trophies to be won.

And yes, this thread deals with facts, but since this is not about Pele vs. Messi, vs Cruyf, vs de stefano. Your facts are not relevant. It has already been established that the notion of best in history is in itself flawed.

I think this thread was started for sure because of the things Pele said about Messi.

First of all, let us finally recognize that Pele is a douchebag for what he said, because he is obviously being biased in favor of Neymar who isn't half the player Messi is. THAT comparison we can make. We can also make the comparison between Messi and Maradona, I believe. Messi has not reached a level that can touch Maradona. Maradona was incredible and, unlike Pele and Messi and whoever else, took a mid table team to champions. He also pretty much won the 86 WC by himself. He didn't have a "garrincha" to pair him up.

Also, not every single defense in every single team tried to break Pele's legs. It was only certain teams that did this.

Any idiot would say Pele because of what the world tells us...but there is no greater player that has ever lived than Maradona. The real proof is in old people. Ask anyone between the ages of 60-80 who knows what they are talking about and they will tell you. Not one will tell you Pele, except for some patriotic biased douche.

Yes, I am somewhat angry about Pele's comments. But it's true, he is a douche for what he said. And he's a douche every time he talks about "sending his videos" to Maradona and Messi.

You can also account for "inflation" all you want, but I don't believe that term completely applies. The rules changed, strategy changed, the game DID get faster, more to account for. The ball can be argued... you think Pele would have a good shot with a modern day ball? You become skilled with the ball you learn on. Same goes with the field. Defenders would have had just as much trouble with these inconsistencies.

Actually if you watch the tackles, International teams espially like Benfica and Milan as well as nearly every national team like the Czech Republic he played against they intended to do as much damage as they could.
