Some sad facts Empty Some sad facts

Post by Art Morte Sat Nov 01, 2014 6:00 pm

- None of our summer signings have been a hit. Not one.

- There are very little to no signs of improvement.

- Our on-loan defender Andre Wisdom (West Brom) has twice as many clean-sheets (4) as we've kept this season (2).

- Our ex-player Stewart Downing has as many PL goals (2) as our summer signings combined (Moreno & Lallana 1).

- Southampton, from who we bought three of their players for big money and who were joked to be down to bare bones and relegation-fodder before the season, are 8 points above us in the table.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I think it was late last season or early on in the summer when I wrote in the General section "Humble Pie" thread that I was wrong about Rodgers when I initially when he joined was not very impressed by his appointment and his start as our manager. Last season, however, we were great and had that amazing run of 11 consecutive wins that put us so close to the title. Now, I again don't know. We lost our star player, but the effect shouldn't be this drastic.

The two most important areas for a manager are a) the players he brings in and b) how he gets them to play, gets the most out of them. I have to say that this season we're failing in both areas.

The first area has been a problem throughout Rodgers' tenure. Sturridge and Coutinho, great signings. But then, so many underwhelming signings. Allen and Borini were some of his first signings, rather big money, too. I don't think either are really LFC quality. Yet it's sad how we are hoping now for Borini to start when Sturridge is injured. Three of our four strikers weren't at the club last season - Borini, Lambert and Balotelli - and neither of them are looking to be good enough to fire us into the top-4 again. How sad is that?

The summer of 2013, well, they didn't last long, did they? Alberto, Aspas, Ilori. One year on and none of them are in the squad. Mignolet was also bought that summer and a biggish question mark has been hanging upon his head for some time now, refusing to go away. Sakho seems to be out of favour and the final signing of that summer: Kolo Toure. Oh, and let's not forget, Aly Cissokho and Victor Moses on loan.

This summer, the crucial task of re-investing the Suarez money. But hey, good news, we're in the CL, we can get some proper players now! ...Buy three Southampton players only for them to buy better players for less money and do better than us in the league. Buy a star striker and play him in the wrong system, time and again. Emre Can has impressed me the most and he has hardly featured due to injuries.

Maybe this cannot be called a fact yet, but a sad opinion of mine: Rodgers' transfer policy is that of a mid-table manager, not that of a Liverpool manager.

I thought BR was too stubborn for his young age. Even Wenger who is as stubborn as u can get, tweaking his system, squad selection after bad run of games.

Meh...I'm not overly worried. We didn't just lose Suarez we've also had very little of Sturridge. Any team losing a collective 50 goals will be struggling to score. Some of our signings have shown promise. Not giving up yet. There's still time.

^ We've lost 4 games already. (We only lost 6 last season.)

We've scored 13 goals in 10 games... conceding the same amount.

We sit 12 points off first after only 10 games, having to vs Chelsea next week where we'll most drop more points.

Arsenal have finally found some form and will finish top 4. City are guaranteed top 4 given their quality, only team that can chase Chelsea right now. 4th is up for grabs and Spurs and United are right next to us (both a game behind us but both have a game in hand) with new managers that have just come in. They'll no doubt improve when their players adapt to their new style and click, they also have a massive advantage over us and that's we're not in Europe next season. So we have more games to play, and our depth isn't even that great. We have a lot of numbers yes, but we don't have enough quality.

You keep saying "new system, new style, new players" etc yet a team that lost over 5 players, where we bought 3 players off of them, lost their manager, replaced manager (new style), replaced players, sit in second and are looking very good. They'll no doubt fall given their lack of depth, but our transfer strategy was disgusting. We targeted players that don't fit our style, and now we have to try adjust to them. That's not how transfers are supposed to work. You buy players that fit your needs, not the other way around. Look at Chelsea. Look at Soton. Look at West Ham ffs. Look at United as soon as settle.

Our manager is saying we played well when we've only put in one decent performance this season (against Spurs), and that is it. We've been terrible in all competitions, in fact I'd saying we're actually in fortune of where we at right now. We've been gifted wins against the likes of QPR ffs. We're playing no better than when Dalglish/Roy/Rodgers first 5 months and yet you're not worried? lol

seriously bringing Lambert sounded like such a stupid idea given he came for Cou. Rodgers has been too overwhelmed by Europe and last season position. He himself needs to get the shite together and do something because we are not playing football at all. But this is once again a stage where he is really learning now, a true test for him. Since he has so many options, he has no clue how to build a team around existing players and make it function.

Exactly. Seriously now, relax a little. What did you think would happen, you'd lose Suarez to go on and run away with the league and win the European treble?
Top 4 is your target this season, and it's really not out of reach at all.
You will have to somehow manage to get past Southhampton, Swansea and West Ham during the next 28 games.

well top 4 was always my target, even before the season started, as i had posted before. The problem for me is we are so shit and we are not able to play any kind of football at all. That is so disheartening to watch

he provided you sad miserable *bleep* with fantastic, successful and head-turning football last season. 2nd place and CL again after how many years.

Now you lost your best player, who also happened to be the best player in the league last season and responsible for 30+ goals, your other striker and second best player responsible for 20+ goals is out injured, you're playing midweeks now too and are 3 points of top 4 with three quarters of the season still to play, but you can't cut Rodgers some slack?

Don't bother I've been trying to rationalize with the doom-sayers around here for a while.

Even if we don't make top 4 this season I am not that worried. It would really suck, and it would be a failure of a season, but I have faith in Rodgers to lead us long term.

Who isn't cutting ROdgers clack?

Go read through the posts here. Most of us want to give him time.

Neat of you coming here and judging us when your sitting pretty with Guardiola. I bet you were on Van Gaal's ass even when he took you to the CL final.

It was a great season we had, but we shouldn't be this lost with our game just because we lost 1-2 players. Our position in the table isn't that bad, but it's clear as a day that our current performance level will not take us up in the table, the direction will be down.

Also, it's our transfers in that we don't still seem to be getting right. We spent a lot, a lot of money in the summer and I just feel we should have more to show for it than two league goals and two league clean sheets after 10 games.

Oh hell yes Embarassed

I wanted van Gaal gone as soon as he ostracised Luca Toni. Then, by spring of his first season I thought he was a *bleep* genius. One year later I wanted him out again.

I even thought Heynckes would only be mediocre at best for us and wasn't too happy about his reappointment Laughing

We did control the game though. Almost 60% possession, 85% pass success vs. 75%, and many more passes. Krul played well, but mostly the issue isn't with our control of the game it's with our play in the final third. We were offside 7 times, and generally we are having a hard time breaking down teams that defend deep like Newcastle was doing. Right now the blueprint for giving Liverpool a tough game is to play deep and defensive and try to hit us on the break, which is something Newcastle is built for, and that's where the real challenge lies for Rodgers. He is going to have to realize that most teams are setting up against us this way because we can't seem to break through it right now with consistency.

Other than that we're sitting 3 points out of 4th place after 10 games in which we've played some of the worst football as a team in the last 2 years. Reality is that we have nowhere to go but up with the talent available to us (not to mention with Sturridge returning). I'm sure there will be some issues addressed as well in the winter window. Top 4 is still definitely a realistic and attainable goal.

We're also not out of the CL yet, and even if we do go out Europa League is a good competition to try and win to get the boys used to European competition.

A sad fact to send us off to the international break:

Our highest-scorer in the PL after 11 games is Raheem Sterling with 3 goals. Only Burnley's top-scorer has less goals than 3.

We've only got 8 points from last 8 games (games Sturridge has missed)

We've only score 4 goals in the last 4 games (2 own goals, 2 huge deflections).

We have 21 points after 16 games.

Under Roy Hodgson we had 22 points after 16 games.

Hodgson's marquee signing in the summer of 2010 was Raul Meireles for £11.5m. Brendan Rodgers made five (5) signings more expensive than £11.5m in the summer of 2014.
