Martin O Neill appreciation thread
What a win. Solid defending a bit of luck and great counter attacking.
We look much sharper in both attack and defence.
Sunderland legend.

Considering your starting line up, much respect is due to Mr O Neill and the Sunderland team today.
Ferguson never suffers setbacks alone it seems.

Did you see our defence.
2 midfielders, a right back at centre back and someone who hasnt played in the EPL for 2 years!
Yet they can keep out the best attack in England.

(Opta Sports): 10 - After taking 11 points in their first 14 matches, Sunderland have accrued 10 points in 5 games under Martin O'Neill. Boost.
Most attacking team in the league comes to play, so we start with only 2 defenders and loose one of them.
The sunderland way

Re: Martin O Neill appreciation thread
I didn't really pay much attention to why he didn't get a job sooner but I was surprised as he made Villa a real competitor for Europe every year. HE even had them in the hunt for 4th some years but ran out of gas near the end of the year due to lack of depth.
Did he turn jobs down, is he a pain in the ass, does he ask for too much power? What happened that took him so long to get another position especially when so many jobs have opened up?

Re: Martin O Neill appreciation thread
He left Villa because they were selling all his best players. Barry, Milner etc and Lerner wasn't really giving him funds to replace them.
Since he left Villa there wasn't really any suitable jobs for him. If Kenny hadn't been so involved with Liverpool he probably would have gone there, had been heavily linked with the job for a long time.
Newcastle he face palmed and loled at. City already had Manchini in mind when they sacked Hughes.
It was the Celtic job he left to look after his wife when she was ill. We originally approached him prior to appointing Keane manager but his wife was still to ill.
If you look at his managerial record its actually pretty immense,

At Leicester he turned a moribund team into two-time League Cup winners and at Celtic he did even better, winning the league on three occasions and guiding the Bhoys to the 2003 UEFA Cup final.
His move to Aston Villa almost instantly turned an underachieving side into a Premier League force with three top-six finishes.

Yh right you keep thinking that, he rejected us because his wife had cancer at the time and it didnt make geographically sense no other reason.......
Also by your reasoning he would reject sunderland aswell, considering the joke that you are.......
Oh and we have never gone after O'Neill he left Villa, we went after O'Neill before he joined Villa

Re: Martin O Neill appreciation thread
When is he supposed to have rejected newcastle
Prior to :-
Robson
Souness
Roeder
Allardyce
Keegan
Kinear
Shearer
Hughton
or Pardews appointment.
You might have had a few good months recently but prior to that you were the laughing stock of English football and a career death trap. No decent manager wanted anything to do with you, hence you ending up with Pardew. A championship manager who had been sacked by West Ham, Charlton & Southampton.
Compared to Sunderland who were much more attractive to him, with a decent, respected Chairman & Owner.
Stop being so bitter mole and stay off the alco pops wile on the internets.
The bookies odds for when both clubs needed new managers shows the difference between the 2 clubs.
Prior to Bruce we were linked with the likes of Steve Bruce, Gordon Strachan, Sven Goran Eriksson, Slaven Bilic, Frank Rijkaard, Mark Hughes, Jurgen Klinsmann Avram Grant, Roberto Mancini, Claudio Ranieri, Gerard Houilier.
Similar names post Bruce
Newcastles best odds were for the likes of the likes of Beardsley, Kinear, Shearer, Ant and Dec, championship managers.

Got it, I didn't know his wife was sick. As for a suitable job for him, there have been a lot of jobs open up just in the last year not to mention the year before.
By my count and correct me if I'm wrong these jobs have all been open in the last year, Blackburn, Chelsea, Fulham, Liverpool, Newcastle, West Brom, Birmingham City and Sunderland.
All of them are pretty much equal to Sunderland IMO

Re: Martin O Neill appreciation thread
We were crap between Sir Bobby's sacking and now, where have i denied that?
But you are no better, granted he does support you...... iam not bitter btw and not drinking my comment earlier was about when i was at the pub watching the game.....
We have made some shocking choices yes, but the only time we tried for O'Neill was before he was at Villa......
I will agree about the career death trap thing tho and i dont agree with you about Pardew btw......
He's pissing me off atm due to a few reasons but hes done an outstanding job in his first year, also t West Ham they were a top 10 side and got to a cup final and then the Tevez and Mascherano thing was shoved in his face and at Charlton they were practically down when he got the job......
He's definitely a premiership manager.

Great manager. I rate him really highly. Probably the best English manager around. Its a wonder why he hasn't been given a go at a bigger club yet. I thought he should have gone to Liverpool, but Kenny has done a great job.
