That's because he had a 2nd DM (Xabi) to help him out and make up for his "headless chicken" runs to get the ball, which worked, but wouldn't work if he were the only DM.

Mascherano at Liverpool regularly covered in defense as the CB or RB pushed forward, and generally put himself in position to intercept passes or kill opposition attacks very well.

Depends how you define a DM, Xabi plays as our DLP but he does alot of the grunt work of a DM

As it stands Xabi Alonso has the most tackles for Real Madrid this season with 49, he also has the second most steals in the team with 157.
