Pep was asked after the AC Milan game why he didn't start Piqué. He was quoted to say that he doesn't have to justify his selection all the time. Sometimes later, he added ' I just wanted all the pacey players at the back'

pique is much faster than puyol thats for sure
maybe he just meant that pique wouldnt be able to keep up with the pace since he has just returned back from injury

I remember Pique keeping up with Ronaldo in a few Clasicos, so he's not exactly a turtle

I think he has quick bursts of speed to match quite a few of the faster players out here. Plus, he knows how to position himself in order to keep up. What's the term, right, deceptively quick. One of my favourite defenders out now really...

Yes he is slow. I mean, look at his build ffs. Still a great defender though. Not the most consistent, but always shows up in the big matches.

Thiago Silva would fit in like a glove.
Puyol isn't exactly that fast though and it seems to be working.

Puyol has too much quality to flop anyway.
Hummels positional sense and quality on the ball would mean he would depend less on speed. Might not be a match made in heaven, but I actually think it could work.

he probably didn't say that, who would when you have puyol playing right back, Pique is only what 24? so for his age your not going to find many faster center backs anyway
