Raul should have won in 2001. Absolutely shameful that he didn't IMO.

Yeah... that 2001 vote proved to me once and for all what BS the ballon d'or had becomes.
In fact, all these awards have become bs. It's a political victory as opposed to a football victory.

The fact that Batigol never even made the podium is amazing too.

2010 Scandal. Other than that i still wonder how Henry or Eto'o never won it.

Re: Best player in recent history to not win B d'or
Henry never won because he never lead his club to the CL or his nation to a trophy. There I said it.
He was banging in the goals in England but this was a time when the EPL was considered inferior to Spain, Italy and arguably even Germany.
Obviously Henry is a legend and supremely talented but it's hard to give him the award when other players can point to big time performances in Europe and the World Cup/Euro's.
Which kind of sparks the debate of whether Xavi, Iniesta, Sneijder or even Robben deserved the award in 2010.

Why did Eto'o not win then?

Re: Best player in recent history to not win B d'or
It's an individual award Z.... has nothing to do with team accolades. Supposed to award the best player of the year. Besides, it's not like Henry has a small international trophy case:
France NT
- WC winner in 1998 and finalist in 2006
- Euro winner in 2000
- Confederations cup in 2003
Club
- 2 EPLs, 2 La Liga and 1 Ligue 1
- 3 FA cups, 1 CDR, 1 France Supercup
etc.
He has 20 trophies so far.
But again, it's an individual award. It's not even an MVP, which connotates value to the team. It's all about the player only.

That's BS and you know it, its supposed to be an invidual award yes but it clearly isnt.......
If that was the case Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Henry would have all been above Cannavaro in 2006....

Re: Best player in recent history to not win B d'or
That's why we're calling the whole ballon d'or concept bs.... this is all about criticizing it Mole.
For someone to say that it's justified that a player didn't win a ballon d'or because his team was not successful validates this entire argument = ballon d'or is a political sham.
But i wanted to add that the teams Henry was involved in were wildly successful actually.

Henry is an obvious one.So is Raul.
Surprised no one mentioned Ballack.
Deserved it in 2002 as he was sensational throughout the season.
Instead Ronaldo won in an absolute farce.

Re: Best player in recent history to not win B d'or
It depends on performance and if you preform in big games then you are more likely to win.
Henry slots in the winner against Barca in Paris (like he does week win week out in England) or/and Slots the winner past Buffon in Berlin then he would have won the Balon D'Or pretty easily IMO.
Also,
I would include Redondo in that list. Carried Madrid to their CL win in 2000.

Re: Best player in recent history to not win B d'or
Raul for sure. Henry a close second. Imo, Raul deserved it more than Henry because he was breathtaking in that 2000-2001 season. His performances were just unreal. Add to the fact that he always performed when it mattered, and carried his team all the time. Not to take anything away from Henry, that guy was as good.
This would have been the best attack for the decade.
-----------------Henry --------Ronaldo
-----------------------Raul
jizz.

Messi recieving it in 2010 was the biggest farce.

Completely agree here. tbf Alex loads of jokers have won the award, Cannavaro winning it was nothing short of a disgrace. Sneijder not even being in the op 2. Henry is understandable, performed in the EPL, never carried arsenal in the cl or france internationally and the time he did well in the cl Dinho and eto were doing better than him. Ballack is one for me. Laudrup is still the biggest one for me. R9 will continue to be ovverated even though he did sod all tbh. Great players elevate their teams, when did R9 ever do that? He was talented but he never raised his team to any decent heights hence why he will never bee in the same class as cruyff, zidane, maradona, di stefano, puskas and backenbauer. Simple as. Rant over.

Xavi, if it wasn't for Messi's era he would've won at least one. especially after Euro 2008

Re: Best player in recent history to not win B d'or
Xavi? Is this a joke? When has he ever been the best? He is up there but he has and never will be number 1. Ronaldo was better in 08, messi and Ronaldo in 09, Sneijder and Messi in 10, messi in 11. He deserves top 3 but he is nowhere the best, and you all know it.
