Juventus director general Beppe Marotta insists the club have strengthened over the summer, but he’s disappointed by Amauri’s refusal to leave.

“We tried to improve the squad and I think we managed to achieve that,” the former Sampdoria official noted.

“We wanted to sign at least one more new face in defence, but the players available were not better than those we already have.

“We’ve reduced the gap between ourselves and the other clubs, but now it is up to Coach Antonio Conte.

“Have we signed too many players? I don’t think so,” he added. “Napoli, who finished third last season, made 12 signings.

“We thought it would only be right to meet the needs of our new Coach.”

Conte will still have some players at his disposal who the club tried to sell this summer, with Amauri just one who is surplus to requirements.

“The player has a contract worth €3.8m net,” the transfer chief added. “Marseille offered him an extension to his current deal with the help of a contribution from us. Amauri rejected it.”

Marotta was also questioned on Reto Ziegler, the new signing from Sampdoria who boss Conte doesn’t rate.

“Everything can be resolved with a bit of calmness,” Marotta concluded.
