Ronaldo with Portugal,,, stil w/o any achievement

hi every1

i just wondring why some people talking about messi's performance with argentina & never talk about ronaldo

at least messi won the world cup u 20 in 2005 & the olympics golden medal in 2008

messi was the best player in argentina's games while we saw ronaldo still can't perform well like what he do with clubs

failed in 2004 vs greece + the olympics
did nothing in world cup 2006 + 2010

so, what u think ?

I'm on an iPad, so I can't really type the facts... Too long and tedious.

Just remember what Portugal was before Ronaldo arrived and what it has been since he played. Research it. They may not have won anything, but the improvement is very drastic.

Cristiano contributed during the 2004 Euros and 2006 WC for Portugal though. He also had a really good players as his teammates who carried their fair share of the load which what it boils down to really.

His Euro 2008 and WC 2010 performances weren't anything to be proud of though.

Its like they have never seen Euro 2004 or WC 2006.

portugals key players in were more deco, figo and costa in euro 04 and deco and figo in wc 06 than ronaldo

He mentioned that Cristiano failed in the final of Euro 2004 (ignoring completely his contributions during each round) and nothing at WC 2006 which is another fallacy. He actually did nothing during 2008 and 2010 though. That one was pretty much a given...

Leave the guy alone.. he's done fine with them, though he can do better.

Portugal record before CR7

World cups: 3rd in 1966, 1st round in 1986 and 1st round in 2002. NEVER qualified for the WC other than those 3 tournaments
Euros: Semi-finals in 1984, quarterfinals in 1996 and semis in 2000. NEVER qualified for the Euro other than these 3 tournaments.

Portugal with CR7 (starting in 2003)

World cups: semis in 2006, 1/8 round in 2010. Always qualified for the WC and legit contending teams, although flawed.
Euros: Final in 2004, quarterfinals in 2008. Same as with the WC.

He was a beast through 2007 with Portugal scoring 20 goals in 52 games.... all by the age of 22. As Portugal has transitioned its squad almost completely in the past 4 years, results have been difficult. BUT STILL, Portugal has made it to the elimination rounds of every tournament. They are poised to make another big run now with the new players.

And so people don't say Figo this and that... Luis declined sharply after the 2003-2004 season. Ronaldo barely played in 2003 (2 appearances) and then exploded in 2004 with 7 goals in 16 appearances. CR7 was named member of the team of the tournament in Euro 2004 as a newcomer to the world stage... he was 19 then.

I never said that or implied that. I said he contributed and not the fallacy you have written. What's so hard to understand?!

He didn't do anything after 2006 because he didn't have the right players to feed him the ball.

Until Paulo Bento came.

look at the squad he had and the injuries from 2006-2010. very flawed teams... he was often isolated on the attack.

Anyway, he's a pretty good player for Portugal. But you expect him to win anything? Portugal have never won anything. How can you even compare Portugal with Argentina

But yeah, it's not surprising Messi and Ronaldo can't perform like they do at their clubs. It's a whole new team.

He does get more of a free pass than Messi on the international stage, no doubt about that.

Not debatable though is that Portugal has to trot out Postiga as their starting striker ROFL

Postiga got the equaliser against England in Euro 2004. Think that's about it really. And I kinda agree, Cristiano does get a bit of a free pass...

Well in fact I'm the one of the posters here who critize Ronaldo's performance a lot on the international level, same applies to Messi

Messi does not get a free pass because he is better than Ronaldo (this is not really debatable if you understan football) which is why he gets criticized more harshly.

He should do better because he not only can, but is absoloutly poised to do so. Therefore, Messi will not be considered as great as he can be if he does not win a WC with Argentina. Because he is absoloutly expectd to. Just as was the case with Ronaldo in 1998, which after he gets blasted by everyone.

On topic, CR played fine with the PNT pre 2008. It is then that he began to decline, but truth be told, the PNT post 2006 was just recovering from th loss of a golden generation.

Ronaldo/Portugal 2004 Euro's lost in the Final

Ronaldo/Portugal 2006 WC got knocked out by eventual finalists France

Ronaldo/Portugal 2008 Euro's got knocked out by eventual finalists Germany

Ronaldo/Portugal 2010 WC got knocked out by eventual winners Spain

Ronaldo plays in a less talented far less attacking squad/formation/system with Portugal, just look at Portugal's defensive record leading into the World Cup

Messi plays in the all attacking star system of Argentina and still has not scored in 16 competitive games for Argentina, nor has he really helped Argentina really show their might despite supposedly being so much better than Ronaldo, in fact Messi's performances almost had Argentina not qualify at all for the World Cup in 2010

Both have not done anything of note in International football.
