He dominated club football. He's played 1000 matches and scored over 800 goals. He has the record for most Ballon d'ors, and has broken countless of other records.

His genius on the ball is something we might never see again.

He won everything there is to win, but the World Cup. They created debates questioning where he stands because that was the one trophy missing.

In his last attempt, he's finally done it. A true fairytale ending.

Ppl seems to measure him using another level of expectation its ridiculous, what hes been doing all these yrs have been unbelievable n no one has come close, past or present basically. Still, endless amount of clueless fans have criticised him over the yrs. These guys really must have come to realise how wrong they were if not already then definitely after today Very Happy

For example just saw now that the goals record for Arg NT is Messi on 96, second after him is Batistuta just on 55, meaning hes score almost double the amount, n then theres likes of Ageruo, Crespo, Higuain further way off, just another insane state by Messi.

Dream finish to seal his legacy... just watching pundits n ppl saying this was the best WC final n in some cases best match they have ever watched, really says a lot. God made the stars align for this. Hasnt been such good thing happen in the world in yrs Razz

He's most definitely the GOAT in all accounts though now.

Legacy wise, accomplishment wise, and "practically" as well.

Only thing anyone can possibly hold on to from a legacy standpoint is Pele's 3 world cups, but that's eye roll worthy imo.

I really wish a lot more folks would entertain this idea that there can be more than one goat but this wouldn't be the case at all.

it's natural for everyone to compare and rank the best of the best... it's just a human thing since competitiveness is such a crucial aspect of evolution and life

They were all born and raised in France though. It's ridiculous to say they import players from Africa.

The real importing is done by countries like Italy and Portugal who recruit talent directly from Brazil and naturalize them

Michael Jordan was a beast too... but not moreso that Kareem. Even old school Chicago Bulls fans will tell you. The only player that Wilt Chamberlain said he needed help with to defend in his prime.

I'll also say that, despite what many think, Lebron is just as much a goat as Kareem and Jordan btw. Love or hate him, he is insane.

Messi is the goat though, I believe he’s surpassed every player at this point. If he wins a champions league with PSG it’ll be an even bigger gap. He kept Barcelona alive during a time where they should’ve been a midtable team. He’s in his own tier.

C.Ronaldo at tier 2 is.. yeah, I disagree. He’s number two because Messi is an alien who has dominated the game. He’s clear of Pele, maradona, and cruyff now. CR is on par with those players. We are the greatest team of the last decade, and Ronaldo was the spearhead of that. It’s just that Messi is a monster.. and getting better in the big moments as he ages, it’s just a matter of how far he makes that gap now.

This is the case with pretty much most West European countries. Its not just limited to France. Look at the diversity in Germany's and England's teams. Even Spain and Italy have players of African descent representing them. This number is only going to increase going forward given how pace, power and athleticism has become a significant factor in modern football.
