Lionel Messi Cements Himself as the GOAT
He dominated club football. He's played 1000 matches and scored over 800 goals. He has the record for most Ballon d'ors, and has broken countless of other records.
His genius on the ball is something we might never see again.
He won everything there is to win, but the World Cup. They created debates questioning where he stands because that was the one trophy missing.
In his last attempt, he's finally done it. A true fairytale ending.
Thank you, Leo.

Re: Lionel Messi Cements Himself as the GOAT
One of the goats. There isn’t a single goat (in any sport) imo.
Pele was one. Beckenbauer redefined what a defender is. Etc
Don’t discount pre 1995 players. You couldn’t build super teams before that so nobody played in an ideal situation. That’s why NT play is so important. It’s a more even playing field.

Re: Lionel Messi Cements Himself as the GOAT
Best of all time CONFIRMED once and for all. Ends of debate, which have lasted for more than a decade
Ppl seems to measure him using another level of expectation its ridiculous, what hes been doing all these yrs have been unbelievable n no one has come close, past or present basically. Still, endless amount of clueless fans have criticised him over the yrs. These guys really must have come to realise how wrong they were if not already then definitely after today For example just saw now that the goals record for Arg NT is Messi on 96, second after him is Batistuta just on 55, meaning hes score almost double the amount, n then theres likes of Ageruo, Crespo, Higuain further way off, just another insane state by Messi.
Dream finish to seal his legacy... just watching pundits n ppl saying this was the best WC final n in some cases best match they have ever watched, really says a lot. God made the stars align for this. Hasnt been such good thing happen in the world in yrs So happy

He's most definitely the GOAT in all accounts though now.sportsczy wrote:One of the goats. There isn’t a single goat (in any sport) imo.

Legacy wise, accomplishment wise, and "practically" as well.
Only thing anyone can possibly hold on to from a legacy standpoint is Pele's 3 world cups, but that's eye roll worthy imo.

I really wish a lot more folks would entertain this idea that there can be more than one goat but this wouldn't be the case at all.
Obviously I agree with your statement big time Sports and of course, tough luck today. Didier got his match planning incredibly wrong today. So so so wrong.

He is the only and undisputed goat. Would also be without this trophy, this was more like a formality

it's natural for everyone to compare and rank the best of the best... it's just a human thing since competitiveness is such a crucial aspect of evolution and life
but your point is taken sportszcy, different eras, different GOATs
but still... Lionel Andres Messi, GOAT of GOATs

They were all born and raised in France though. It's ridiculous to say they import players from Africa.
The real importing is done by countries like Italy and Portugal who recruit talent directly from Brazil and naturalize them

This is insanely racist, those players are as French as any other, it doesn't matter what their skin color is.

Re: Lionel Messi Cements Himself as the GOAT
He is the GOTE. Greatest of this era.
Tier 1: Di Stefano, Pele, Cruyff and Beckenbauer, Maradona and now Messi.
Tier 2: R9, CRonaldo, Mdoric, Xavi, Iniesta and Zidane, Platini
Anyone still putting Zidane in tier 1 needs their head checked. National team merchant and first touch merchant.

Lol wtf I didn’t say they aren’t French or deserving of French citizenship but they do come from a line of migrants anyway that wasn’t my point. The point is that France enjoys an abundance of talent due to their colonial past which many other NTs don’t so it’s not a level playing field to be honest

How is the colonial past working out for England?
Also 90% of Argentina's population is the result of immigration to South America. It's odd to point out that one country has benefited from immigration while the other's entire population is the result of it.

Umm no. he gets points for longevity. not the time or the place, but with mike i don't even think its close. every finals he was in there was no debating who was the finals mvp. kareem definitely best center, definitely has the best career if we talking kindergarten, high school, pros etc....but goats, Kareem, all due respect to him, he ain't mike.

They took Sancho and Sterling from the Caribbean so...I guess decently so far.

No man. He was insane.
In high school, he lost 1 game the entire 4 years and won 4 state titles
In college, he lost 1 game in his 3 years and won 3 NCAA titles
Won 6 NBA titles
6x NBA MVP
Was a finals MVP in 1971... and 1985, 14 years later
All time NBA scorer
I saw him play when he was older... just a beast.
Michael Jordan was a beast too... but not moreso that Kareem. Even old school Chicago Bulls fans will tell you. The only player that Wilt Chamberlain said he needed help with to defend in his prime.
I'll also say that, despite what many think, Lebron is just as much a goat as Kareem and Jordan btw. Love or hate him, he is insane.

@jibers I agree with your approach and list. Where do you place Orig Ronaldo?
In terms of 'cements', Messi was already this era's GOAT with or without the WC, but it certainly adds to his legacy and will forever shut off the debate w/Maradona in Argentina.

Messi passed Maradona clearly now. He just needed that one WC where he was great. Win or lose today, I had Messi passing him btw. You can lose football games... it happens.

I know right? You'd think Poles would be more tolerant after that whole Lebensraum thing from Hitler. for a culture that was one of the primary targets of the Nazis, they seem to love the same ideology that nearly led to their extermination.
It was just a dumb statement tbh, pretty much all Western European countries have a colonial past, the players who are of African descent have been living in these countries for generations, they are not less French just because their late great-great-grandfather migrated from Africa. if we're being that literal with races you might as well call me a German too cause Iranians are descendant of Indo Europeans.

Re: Lionel Messi Cements Himself as the GOAT
Messi is the goat though, I believe he’s surpassed every player at this point. If he wins a champions league with PSG it’ll be an even bigger gap. He kept Barcelona alive during a time where they should’ve been a midtable team. He’s in his own tier.
C.Ronaldo at tier 2 is.. yeah, I disagree. He’s number two because Messi is an alien who has dominated the game. He’s clear of Pele, maradona, and cruyff now. CR is on par with those players. We are the greatest team of the last decade, and Ronaldo was the spearhead of that. It’s just that Messi is a monster.. and getting better in the big moments as he ages, it’s just a matter of how far he makes that gap now.

This is the case with pretty much most West European countries. Its not just limited to France. Look at the diversity in Germany's and England's teams. Even Spain and Italy have players of African descent representing them. This number is only going to increase going forward given how pace, power and athleticism has become a significant factor in modern football.
