It's not even a discussion, Ronaldo in the saudi league looks like just another player whereas Messi in the MLS looks like Tsubasa on psychedelics.

yup maradona was either banned or preoccupied by his 30s. but i wonder how many he even attempted, cos i remember watching USA 94 and asking myself why batistuta was taking most of argentina's freekicks. i think its rare that guys become specialists early on, very rare. Part of that might be they just havent mastered a technique that bests suits them. When you're young most people are just striking the ball with power and havent mastered the bend.

Also if you're on a good team, unless you're hitting the mark out the gate, you leave the freekick duties to better and more seasoned players. Surprises: i didnt expect to see roberto dinamite, pele, nakamura, nor puskas on this list. i thought pirlo had more freekicks scored than del piero for some reason (makes sense that alessandro has more when i think of it). i expected rivaldo to be on the list.....thought for some reason he had scored more freekicks than r. carlos.

I'm not so sure about that. AFC teams tend to outperform CONCACAF teams at the club world cup and the Saudi league does have a lot of good players that the general public doesn't known about.  Someone like Romarinho could have succeeded in Europe had he not chosen to go for the big money directly from Brazil.
