Not to mention he will be 39 in 2026. I don't expect even a physical monster like Ronaldo to play at 39 let a lone a player like Messi who has struggled with his fitness since his late 20s.

He is not taking a paycut lol, much less 50%. All he has agreed to is 20 mil for the first year. Key being for the first year. He plays 2 seasons but still gets paid in years 3,4 and 5. He's not. The rest of the money is shifted to signing and other bonuses.

well Messi isnt really comparable to any other player though is he?

The sponsors etc he brings are well worth such a salary.

Compare that to Griezmann earning over 20m or 30m. And put that in the context of how much he brings in terms of marketing etc. Messi very much deserves that money even at 34.

If the sponsorships he brings were worth such a salary, how come you are spending like 100% of your revenue on wages?

The previous salary was too much which I made clear several times before but the current one seems reasonable. How much do you think he should get? 10m a season? Before he earned 60m base salary I think, not sure, so base 20m now sounds accurate.

Griezmann earning 36m sounds like more of an abomination seeing as Neymar has a base 30m at PSG.

The Saul Griezman swap seems to have fallen through.
Nothing has changed for us from a wages perspective. We are still saddled with the humongous wages of Griezman, Coutinho, Umtiti and Pjanic; the 4 players we are actively trying to get rid off. Not to mention the humongous wages from the new Messi contract. Which is not a paycut by any stretch of the imagination. All it is is a deferral of wages to years 3,4 and 5 when he will no longer play for us. Not to mention bonuses and off the books payments. We are Barcelona. Lets not kid ourselves. Shady accounting is part of our DNA now.
