To say somebody should do something, before making a decision on it, would render the world useless in most things because very people experience a significant number of things to a degree to use it to form the basis of a position.

Have you ever been educated on how to vote? I perceive voting as a skill that needs to be earned, same as performing a surgery. To different extents obviously, but still.

I agree. But that, even more so, strengthens my point that democracy (democratic capitalism in this case, I guess) is very flawed.

I find this really funny. Sweden In other news, Sweden have now officially banned both inside and outside smoking in public places, like restaurants. What will they do next?

Against illegalizing public smoking? I certainly am. I'm not a smoker, and I prefer not to be around people who smoke, but come on, man - you can't start policing people's behaviour to this extent. It's already illegal to smoke inside of public places, and I think that's fair. The outside is a different matter. I really hope we don't adopt this law. I see it as one step further in taking away people's freedom, and I don't want us to become as redundantly progressive as Sweden are increasingly becoming. You can avoid smokers just fine by steering away from the smoking areas outside. Needless to say, I also don't think boys should be forced to sit down when they're urinating

I agree that it's harmful. Alcohol is harmful, too. Internet porn has been discussed in the media as one of the most underrated, psychologically detrimental things of the modern times, as it desensitizes people to actual sex, over time. Car exhaust, people being loud, people being insensitive to more sensitive people. It can be argued that certain sports are harmful, as well. Negative opinions can be harmful, and you wouldn't believe how many times I've heard someone suggest that certain types of attire are harmful, or "encourages rape". I kid you not. It's in dictator-lead countries and countries with religion-based laws where you'll see laws like these blossom to their utmost potential. I really insist that people should tolerate some of these things without resorting to law enforcement.

I, for one, don't want to open up the can of worms that is policing how people behave. If you want to stop people from smoking, or doing something that can be considered mildly harmful or annoying, the best way to go about doing so is to convince them from a young age that they shouldn't do it - not take away their right to do so. Drugs and physical violence are illegal for a good reason, but a line should definitely be drawn between what's sensibly tolerable behaviour, and what's not.

I normally agree with you 99% of the time but my stance on smoking is very cemented already. There are places in my city where there's designated smoking areas but you still have to walk within 2-3 metres of the area because theres no other way around so you are basically forced to enter a cloud of cig smoke if you want to enter or exit.

All that gender related stuff I'm very on the fence or disagree with completely but smoking is actually harmful so it's more clear-cut of a situation imo.

That sounds really awful, and substantially more intruding than the public smoking environment I’m used to. I don’t know the official stats, but I’m guessing relatively few people in Sweden and Norway smoke, compared to in other countries.

A lot of people here use snus as an alternative to smoking(almost 1/3 of Swedish men, a couple of years back), and I’ve extremely rarely felt so bothered by someone else smoking, that I felt that I couldn’t easily avoid it. That’s an experience I associate with holidays abroad.

Therefore, I think Sweden’s suggestion to ban public smoking is really puzzling, unless something would suggest a real, public safety hazard, like what you’re describing sounds like. Then again, I find a lot of their progressive laws puzzling, and they tend to enforce them where it’s not needed.

They have such positive statistics in many facets of their society, and yet they seem more than willing to destabilize that by striving for some pretentious ideals. Honestly, though, I would have a problem with having to go out of my way to avoid smokers. I’ve probably had that problem two or three times in both Sweden and Norway, and those smokers were just outright disrespectful.

Smoking is disgusting and should be taxed even more, make a package 20 Euros or something. A few weeks ago I was standing in a line to rent a roawing boat, line was very long, like 30 people waiting. Guy infront of me suddenly lights up a cigarette. Technically he was "outside".

Smoking in restaurant areas is fucking disgusting and disrespectful. Never liked it and I find weird that people actually smoked when other people ate before the indoor smoking bans. No bans outside in restaurants means you can’t sit outside.

Also comparing it to alcohol isn’t a good argument. Alcohol should also be banned if people kept spraying it in other customers’ heads

I hate smoking with a passion, and always have. But even I think you should be allowed to smoke in open areas or in the privacy of your own home (as long as no kids are around).

Smoking is for the birds. Illegalize it.

Well, people who get drunk in public do far more harm to others than people who smoke. I dislike passive smoking as much as anyone, but I don't think outside smoking is such a big issue in Sweden that it would warrant a ban in public areas. I've been to all of the largest cities in Sweden, and it's a non issue compared to the outside smoking environment in pretty much any other country I've been to. Why don't they just ban smoking altogether? I suppose they have the balls to upset smokers, but not the balls to upset the tobacco manufacturing bigwigs.

If it was a significant risk Japan's birthrate would be decreasing at an even faster rate because until very recently many were born with a cig in their mouth, and it stayed there until they died. Open and closed spaces. My grandpas girlfriend does a pack a day. Want her to stop, but what can you tell an 83 year old woman who has done it since the 50's, and whose parents both did it and who both lived until their 90's ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

I think smoking has become the boogeyman for many other bad life choices, and perhaps suspicious cheap ingredients some cigarette companies put into their product.
