I really don't understand why they do extra time in these glorified friendlies. Just go to penalties and be done with it.

German Supercup has penalties without extra time.

Have to say that I don't like the concept of that. I accept penalties as what you resort to after everything else has been exhausted.
You need extra time of playing for that exhaustion, in every sense, IMO.

In normal circumstances I'd agree, but during preseason- the players for the most part barely have fitness to play 90 minutes let alone 120 plus penalties. I'd rather it just go to penalties.

Yeah true. And for the German Supercup I'm fine with it too as that's really not an important trophy.
I consider the European Supercup a bit bigger though and I think it used to be played a few weeks later in the season, when the teams were already in league business, IIRC
