There's a third alternative. You know, where we don't shit on the kid but at the same time not pretend like he's the second coming of Jesus.

Maybe a youngster who has a lot of potential and talent for his age but he's in no way the best in the world or even close it it?

First, Lass Diarra was a good DM, and was a pure DM. not a B2B, so your point is invalid before it even begins.

Also, De Jong never played successfully as a "DM dropping between the CBs" at a high level, lmao, the absolute gaul to come on here and to dare say he should play in place of Busquets. Not even in a millions years he will reach Busquets level, it does not matter how many youtube videos you watch. Even at his best De Jong was playing in a double pivot at Ajax and he wasn't the one with defensive responsibilities. Such an overrated player.

They're employing the same mental gymnastic they used to justify Coutinho's bad performances. At some point, they had to come to terms with the fact they were simply conned into overpaying for a one-trick pony hype job.

They can say whatever they want about which position or system is ideal for him, but de Jong is already not living up to their own expectations. Most of the Barça fanbase and their media thought they were getting some Cruyffian wunderkind/complete midfielder who's gonna be the focal point of their transition play. Someone with the skills they ascribed to him in the summer would have no trouble operating as a CM. Yet here they are trying to convince themselves this genius can only show his class as a sole DM in front of the defense ( A position he rarely played at Ajax or with the Dutch NT ).

Playing with Schone in a double pivot has no reliable link to him being a Busquets replacement as his role was totally different for Ajax

Exactly. For me Frenkie is a standout performer in Barca which is a team in shambles currently. He is living up to my expectations so far considering the circumstances.

Goretzka is better than Valverde the same way Hummels is a top 5 defender on his day: things only a Bayern fan would come up with.
