He didn't oppose him.

He was leading an investigation. That is neither for or against someone. If you're innocent you'd want your name to be cleared.

On the assumption there's something there to be found, he is opposing Trump from Trumps POV

Despite this, Trump can still come out of this looking better than he does now. All he has to do is hire someone universally respected and incorruptible.

If he puts a supporter or crony in as FBI Director,that will be significantly more damaging than him firing Comey.
