Who would you start up front vs Southampton
Re: Arsenal vs Southampton (16/17)
It is damning, but I guess Perez would need some time to integrate?
But to have that in a PL game is inexcusable for a manager.

AW says that Perez & Mustafi were surprised by the pace of the PL

Re: Arsenal vs Southampton (16/17)
Lucas will clearly need time. He's had very few training sessions with his team mates and it's a new league for him to adapt to.
What I draw from that diagram is that there was a lack of combination play between Chamberlain, Ozil, and Walcott. Walcott took very few touches, showing his lack of involvement in the game - we know this is a flaw of playing him on the right but it's unusual for the centre forward to have more touches than a midfielder. Ox actually took a lot of touches but did nothing worthwhile.
Also compare the size of Cazorla's dot to Coquelin's. In a game where we had most of the ball, Coquelin's lack of influence is surely a worry.

Never realised how funny these post match conferences can be
reporter "How is koscielny doing after his eye cut?"
Wenger: "WHO???"
some german journalists asking an absolutely random question after something ancelotti said
Wenger ran away in the end

Must say Koscielny is probably my favourite Arsenal player atm.

Starting with both Ox and Walcott as the wide men is shooting ourselves in the foot. Useless.

I think Walcott is actually important but oxlade is really going down in everyone's book.

"Koscielny has a problem with his face"
and btw that is absolutely NOT a German accent, I'm guessing some hispanic or southern European nationality

I dont get the question. Is he saying "ancelotti thinks positional football bubble will burst"?

Ancelotti apparently gave some interview to AS where he says in his estimation top football might be moving away from hoarding possession towards more verticality again
I assume with 'top football' he meant FC Bayern

I wish that scrub reporter asked Arsene that in PRE match conference so he could have answered it better.

This is how Podolski's Arsenal career started, one poor performance up front and spent the rest of his time here making way for Giroud. Can't see this end differently with Perez.

Cazorla <3
Also, them numbers suggest Mustafi was more than decent and Özil had a better game than I gave him credit for.

Maybe the numbers give him better credit than how good of a game he had.
Food for thought.

Re: Arsenal vs Southampton (16/17)
You could tell Ozil was below par yesterday because his touch was looser than usual. I remember two passes he made in open play that lead to shots from difficult angles that didn't hit the target, so that's half of the chances he made. Number of attacking third passes was a given since Southampton were parking it and we had domination of the ball in their half.
So by the standard we've come to expect to from him he had a disappoiting game. First half you can excuse it more because he had to drop deep to find the ball since the midfield wasn't doing it's job. Second half not so much.
Also wanted to bring up the fact that Southampton are yet another team to get joy down our left hand side, though whether it's because Monreal is seen as a weak link of because the cover on that side is poor I'm not sure yet.

Re: Arsenal vs Southampton (16/17)
Monreal has been really poor for some 6 months now, I don't think it's just that he's poorly protected. Bellerin has Theo Walcott supporting him defensively, is younger than Monreal and still does better than him. He has either lost something defensively or he's just really out of form.
He's basically protected by his reputation these days. I woudn't mind Gibbs having a go at it in his place for a couple of games to see how he does.

Monreal was under aa great deal of pressure in the first 20 minutes, no thanks to his partner Ox’s lack of defensive support, but Monreal ended the match with the top defensive numbers of any player.
This is actually a common occurance: when you see a player with a lot of tackles, interceptions, clearances, and the like, the chances are that he was targeted by the opposition as a weak link. The trick then is to see how well he responded. In this case Monreal passed with A-Levels.
He led all players with 12 ball recoveries, led all Arsenal players with 3/4 tackles (Coquelin was 3/5), led Arsenal with 6 interceptions, and only committed the one foul. Which as we have discussed wasn’t actually a foul.
And still had enough to get forward! He was 3rd in final third passes (16/17), created a shot for his teammate, and won a corner with a well drilled shot in the second half.

I don't think it's this extreme as you make it sound.
Monreal is okay.

Re: Arsenal vs Southampton (16/17)
I'm conflicted about it because yesterday Monreal was targetted and dealt with it just fine - his stats show he was successful in most of his defensive actions despite having to do too much. However, against Watford Amrabaat had him on toast.
We'll see how he does on Tuesday against PSG and if PSG also target that side of the pitch. I'm a bit concerned he'll become like Sagna did as he gets into his 30s where he loses an edge of pace and becomes more vulnerable in 1v1s. And right now it's very easy to isolate him to get those 1v1s because the protection on that side is weak.

Arsenal played against a good side and came away with 3 important points. the performance could have been better without the international break and players had time to gel with each other.

Monreal is better than ok when he at his best, but it's easy to see that he has been poor for some time. Even towards the end of last season he was our worst starting defender (which is why he is constantly targeted by the opposition).
I'm not saying to bin him but I would like to see Gibbs given a chance, maybe all Monreal needs is a breather and Gibbs could benefit from some playing time too-- who knows he might step up his game even further.

Re: Arsenal vs Southampton (16/17)
Sometimes players just need a bit of gametime to get back to their best. I like Gibbs and I am glad he stayed so I hope he starts sometimes too. His pace helps him in places where Monreal can't however Monreal is technically very sound and uses the ball well. It's a trade off
