Southampton vs Arsenal
I have the feeling that Sunday is when the unbeaten run comes to an end.
Now, Southampton have been bad this season. They generate a decent amount of shots, but have struggled for goals all season. They lack quality up front and their defence has been porous.
However, now that they have Hassenhuttel, I expect that they're going to run very hard against us.
That worries me because our backline will be make-shift, to say the least. Both Mustafi and Sokratis are suspended, leaving Koscielny as our only available centre back.
Playing him would be a massive risk considering he's just coming back from a long injury. If we don't play him, we could see a defence of Bellerin, Lichtsteiner, Monreal and Kolasinac. And there'd be no way we could play a back three, unless we want to play Elneny, Jenkinson or Medley there.
Our only hope might be to come out on the right side of a high-scoring game, because there's no way we're keeping a clean sheet.

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
Team:
Leno; Bellerin, Lichtsteiner, Koscielny, Monreal; Guendouzi, XHAKA, Torreira; Mkhitaryan, Iwobi; Aubameyang
Subs: Cech, Maitland-Niles, Elneny, Ramsey, Ozil, Lacazette, Nketiah
Looks like a back four today. Surprised one of Ramsey or Ozil isn't starting. Gonna need good games from Iwobi/Mkhi if we want to create anything.

Turns out XHAKA is playing on the left of a back three.

1-0 Southampton.
Would you be surprised to know we've started badly?

1-1. Good pass by Iwobi to get Monreal in, good cross to pick out Mkhitaryan.
Hopefully that boots his confidence.

2-1 Southampton. Ings again. Another cross, another header...
This make-shift backline is sucking bad.

Entire team has been terrible this entire half. Truly our worst performance of the season so far.

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
The defending from the whole team has been shocking.
Lazy pressing, neither Mkhitaryan or Iwobi are coming back, and Guendouzi/Torreira haven't stopped anything going past them.
No excuse for this considering they've had the week to prepare.

quite something that we can be this bad defensively while not even committing enough players to attack!

Lacazette on for the Bellerin. Looks like a 4-4-2 this second half.

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
Mkhitaryan's shot deflected in. 2-2.
Possibly the easiest prediction I've ever made tbh.

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
Performances like this make me question how much progress we've actually made under Emery so far.
Even if we accept the defence is unfixable with our current personnel (and allow him the benefit of the doubt of having four centre backs out at once), the fact that our attack still relies on the individual brilliance of certain players and we can't retain the ball with any sort of rhythm is a huge concern.

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
Posted this in the gen section. Really worrying stuff:
We've conceded more goals this season so far than we did in 2011-12 at the same point. That was the year we lost 8-2 to United.
We've conceded as many goals as Palace and more than Newcastle.
Only won one in our last eight games at Southampton (D4 L3)
We've allowed 83 shots on goal. That's almost as many as Brighton, Southampton and West Ham. For comparison, Chelsea have only allowed 54.

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
As much as I was in denial, xG was right all along. Emery had chance after chance to improve our game during this run where we had many things go our way but he just hasn‘t been able to.
Now our luck and efficiency has started to wear off and I fear we are showing our true self.

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
shit team selection and we concede 3 similar goals
at least Wengers excuse in these sort of matches was getting caught while attacking in numbers
we cant even properly establish possession in final third for sustained periods
Over or under 50 League goals against by the end of season in PL for us?

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
Unless we do a Leicester 2015/16 and put most of our effort in defence, it's probably not going to get better.
The players we have back there are unreliable, the keeper has mistakes in his game, we want to play in an attacking way but don't keep the ball well enough so always exposing our defence... too many things to deal with at once.

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
Our run ends today which means now we can see what Unai really made of. I wont go sofar as no improvement since Wenger time cause I do see some. But the run really doesn’t reflect our actual level. We were pulling results we didn’t deserve.
Tough schedule ahead, injuries during this crucial time, I suppose it’s time for the team to readjust as well as the fans with our expectations.

Re: Southampton vs Arsenal
I didn't get the reason for playing 3 at the back because southhampton are not such a big attacking threat i think even back four would have been enough.
I really didn't like the effort ozil put in. He was walking on the pitch and because of him we conceded the third goal.
I think emery got the formation wrong in this game.
Another reason we conceded is because kosc and Monreal both od them just came back from injuries. Lichtsteiner also was playing make shift centre back. XHAKA was too slow on the ball. However these player have some play time and they will improve.
I think emery needs time in order to make the team he wants. Still arsenal could have won if iwobi and auba had taken there chances.
Guys please stay positive and hope for the best. Its not as bad as you guys are making it seem. Relax.

We will be judged on how we respond now.
Granted, it's a bit bad that we're losing players to injury.
