Video Assisted Refereeing (VAR) debuts tonight
For anyone interested, VAR debuts tonight where Kuipers will be communicating with the video refs. Not entirely sure how its gonna work, I'll look into it. Infantino and co. and in the stands and will have a press conference about it.
France vs Italy kicking off in an hour.

This is a better longer version

An example of how video assistant refs could be used going forward...

Here's another one
This one is a disallowed goal that ended up counting after help from VAR.

Re: Video Assisted Refereeing (VAR) debuts tonight
Interestingly, the debate after this game was about the loss emotion and spontaneity. People were pointing out that Griezmann and the fans celebrated for a good 45 seconds before the decision to rule out the goal arrived. There are genuine concerns that people will stop celebrating goals now because there's always a chance the video ref will rule it out.
Last night was a good test for the system in sorting out pretty basic offside decisions. I'd like to see how it fares in more complicated decisions, like whether a player's active or not while in an offside position. Sorting that out could take a lot longer.
Then there's the fact that the time taken to use the tech is added on to the end of the game. So if this becomes a regular thing, we're going to see far longer periods of stoppage time than before.

Well, there's always been that side to the argument. And it's valid. There'll always be pros and cons when it comes to technology in football. But I think the authenticity and fairness of a result outweighs these more subjective emotion-based showmanship claims.

Most shocking thing about this video: Pique is not rushing at the ref because he knows someone is looking into it. How much time would be saved by people not complaining to refs if this were wide scale?

There was always a chance that the linesman would take a while to raise the flag and rule the goal out, though...
Changes are needed and technology needs to be implemented if available.

Really awkward that the entire team and the stadium spent like a minute celebrating only to get it ruled offside

I'm for a tennis like system where each team gets a set of challenges. Would mean refs still have to do their best possible job, emotion and spontaneity would remain and would put a max on the amount of time spent reviewing decisions.

Doesn't getting it right mean something? Yesterdays use in France-Spain game corrected two ref/ linemen calls proving the technology is better than humans. Every major sport is using this technology for close calls. About time Fútbol adopted this as well.

I don't mind the awkward and delayed celebrations if they get the call right at the end.

If this technology was available in 2014. We win the league.
That second goal would have won us the game instead of losing it. +3 points to us. -3 points for City.
Slip and Cystanbul doesn't matter because we're already parading the streets of Liverpool by this time.

Re: Video Assisted Refereeing (VAR) debuts tonight
Replace the assistant refs with robots/machines that will immediately tell you whether its a legit goal or not. The goal scorer can look at a screen or something with flashing red and green bulbs like in cricket when there is a third umpire referral.
Emotion and maintaining that is also equally important. Delaying the decision and thereby celebration will kill one of the key aspects of the game.
Also support BC's view of introducing 2 referrals for each side in a game.

About time these technologies finally got implemented. Sooooooooo many countless horrendous ref decisions, especially decisive ones in big games in history, finally we can hopefully see none or less of them going forward.

Re: Video Assisted Refereeing (VAR) debuts tonight
What I don't understand is why they don't do an automatic refereeing for offsides.
Also, what happens if the referee signals an offside in a clear cut chance but before the player can score (hence VAR can't be used). That would be still very unjust.
All for technology. I welcome the VAR, especially offside decisions which are simply impossible to rule for humans.
