Gotcha. That makes more sense. I agree then, specifically with Stein's opportunism. Had she been out there with Bernie early on when he started his campaign, she would've positioned herself much earlier to capture his supporters and launch a more staunch campaign of her own, but the optics suggest she's merely a vulture picking after the leftovers. Too political for someone positioning themselves as a populist.

And it's not just 3rd party voting outside of presidential elections, it's voting outside of presidential elections in general. Congressional elections and local elections have historically very low voter turnout and this is often how those who really shouldn't have power, hold on to it. They want low voter turnout which is why I don't get these ridiculous Rock the Vote e-mails spamming my e-mail box during mid-terms. Because the RocktheVote overlords don't care if I don't vote during the midterms as that serves the interest of their Democrat owners.

Not only do we need more 3rd party voting at more regional levels, there needs to simply be more 3rd party activity at the grassroots level. I honestly don't understand how people in my country cannot understand that real political change starts from the ground up, not the top down.

It's not really true though because libertarian doesn't position itself as left or right. According to nate silver they take equally from both parties. It is somewhat applicable to Stein but she is a socialist and Clinton is a moderate, again not really applicable.

Also the law only applies to purple states.

What do you mean the law only applies to purple states? Elaborate, please. Because vote siphoning shouldn't matter? I agree--im not talking about the national level. It's a response to McLewis that even grassroots building of a 3rd party is futile.

And about the libertarian party...I'm not sure how that changes the complexion of the law. If you're libertarian sure you exist in an interesting place, but there is 1) not enough other libertarians to help you achieve your regulation-less dream and 2) because of #1, you're better off supporting the major party that you feel you support more. You might argue that you couldn't feel that way since you borrow from both sides...I would argue that you would be able to find a candidate you do agree with slightly more than the other.

I don't think that there is no point to voting third party because of the "law", it can be a powerful political statement. For that reason I respect people who are choosing to vote 3rd party even if I think that it's highly important to rally around a candidate that won't introduce a SCOTUS that sends us back 50 years. However I think that any attempt to establish a third party in anything other than a regional race is a pipe dream, and any change stemming from it would only work to influence the two major parties.

That being said, I still think that it's valuable to run candidates third party in local races. At the regional level they're capable of real change to the area around them. To supporters of that party--thats valuable.

The faults of these two terrible candidates, if anything, reflects on the political parties. Not on the ideologies of liberal and conservative morals. You can be a conservative and realize that Fox news is heavily biased and that Trump is unfit to be president. Same as you can be a liberal and realize that The Huffington Post is heavily biased and Clinton is an outright liar.

Why you gotta be so extreme? Take the good of both, one hardly ever agrees 100% with any candidate or party, so there is no need to defend every bit of it. They all deserve certain praise and criticism.
