Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Got in that mood where I had to stop listening to new stuff and jam some classics.
MF DOOM's entire discography more or less (with Madvillainy at the very top)
Nas' discography
GZA - Liquid Swords
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides + Black Star
Tribe Called Quest - People's + the Low End Theory
J Dilla - Donuts
Kool Keith - Dr. Octagonecologyst
OC & Apollo Brown - Trophies
Also gave Run the Jewels a try (late to the party, ik) but I don't get the hysteria about them.
What do you guys bump when you throw your phone to the side (so as not to text your ex while listening to Drake's new shit) and pick your faves?

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Really? Chance is one of my favorites.
I think this is his weakest project yet. Surf is incredible, Acid Rap is great and 10 Day is also pretty good. I thought Coloring Book was a bit confused at times. Tries going for some gospel hip hop and pulls it off I think in the songs he really goes for it, but then that theme is interrupted by songs that are distinctly not "Chance" type songs with collabs with the likes of Young Thug, Future, Lil Wayne and Bieber. Not that I particularly dislike any of those artists (Young Thug is actually pretty good, though I do dislike Bieber of course), but that their style of hip hop is, in my opinion, a bit incongruent with Chance's type of hip hop. Especially with the gospel hip hop theme.
So by having these collaborations, either the song doesn't sound that great because it's got Chance's style with other rappers coming in and not really fitting in (No Problem ft. 2Chainz and Lil wayne) or the song simply sounds like Chance didn't really write it at all, but let others write a song and threw it in there (Mixtape ft. Young Thug and Lil Yachty). That's not always a bad thing, but it doesn't really work when the theme you're going for is gospel hip hop mixed with some positive vibe songs in there like Angels ft. Saba that aren't really gospel at all but fit within the overall theme and sound distinctly Chance the Rapper. Then there is also the Bieber song which I just think is shite.
That's not to be too hard on Chance, I think Blessings, Summer Friends, Same Drugs, Finish Line/ Drown are all great songs, and overall I think it's still a strong mixtape and another testament to Chance's talent. In fact, despite my feelings on it, the crux of any disappointment I have really has to do with the fact that I don't like that there is less Chance than I wanted there to be. Dude is on top of his game right now and one of my favorites.
Surprised no one on here ever seems to talk about him. He's absolutely huge where I go to school.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Leversacci, sit down and listen to Acid Rap imo. Such a great mixtape.
He's not for everyone though. I wouldn't call him among the top tier when it comes to rapping because he's really not all that great. He's decent, and he can come up with some good stuff (dat ultralight beam verse ffs), but a lot of his talent comes from his work beyond the vocals with his band The Social Experiment. The beats and the instrumentals of his songs, which he's heavily involved in, are brilliant. Rapping, he's good enough to not let his instrumentals down and the overall product is the end result. If you can appreciate that end result then you can no doubt be a fan.
Don't know many people in the hip hop game that are making as musically interesting beats as Chance and the social experiment right now tbh. It depends on the person though, I love it. Others may not. I also thought Surf was the 2nd best hip hop album of the year after TPAB last year

Just finished listening to Views. Tend to agree that it's underwhelming overall.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
What do you call using the beat/flow of someone's song, only replacing it with your own lyrics?
Don't say remix.
Would sampling be the right term?

Thing is though I think in its purest definition sampling is just taking a portion of the music and not the entirety of it
