I totally agree with the context and all that. Scoring wonder goals in matches of importance, however you wanna describe that importance is gonna have a bigger impact on the mind than wonder goals that are scored in games of lesser stakes. Think Messi wonder goal vs Getafe all those years vs Maradona's wonder goal against England in a WC quarter finals.

And Benzema's goal still was not goal of the season.

How there is more mental toughness in that clasico game over a CL game or a league game that is key for a team's season is beyond me. Comparing the importance of Gotze's to goal to that one is just wrong.

That goal set us on course for a league title, must be the goal of the season then. Oh wait, tons of better goals have been scored.

I'm inclined to join the haters. Far from the best despite the acrobatics . Deflected cross and he had all rhe time in the world to adjust and score from 6 yards.

you can't remove aesthetics with regards beautiful goals. level of difficulty, how rare you see such goals, those things all count. the only time we start looking at the competition or the match involved is when we start talking about most important goals. gotze's goal was not close to being goal of they year....important it was, but there was nothing eye catching about it....even germans and people like myself who supported germany in that final, i don't think any of us went "whoa, wtf did i just see"? and a goal of the year imo should have that element.....if zidane had scored that leverkusen goal against racin santander in a copa del rey first leg game in the first round, i'd still laud it goal of that year, cos of the beauty ,level of difficulty and very importantly, rarity of such a goal

They're not actually haters, they're simply telling the truth. This is a great goal, no doubt, but goal of the year? Not even close.
