But he had a great career that all footballers would love to have.

I think Pique is one of the best defenders of his generation. He will be remembered for a long time by Barça fans.

However, his overall impact on the sport won't probably be elevated to legend status, and Puyol will probably be remembered most from Barça's period of dominance.

Pique wasn't even the best CB in the pairing with Mascherano.

I will miss him. The kind of guy that made El Clasico heated. Always loved to hate him - a very interesting character and intriguing adversary.

And a very good footballer too, in my opinion a top 10 central defender of this generation, as a starter in one of the best club teams of all times and of the best national teams of all time. Played for over 10 years at the highest level and won it all. Can’t be anything but world class.

Who would be the top 10 defenders of this generation ? In no order, from my pov:
Ramos
Pepe
T. Silva
Van Dijk
Godin
Chiellini
Kompany
Pique
Boateng/Hummels/Varane/Bonucci ?

Ramos und Pepe both overrated imho.

Bonucci and Chiellini would be my joint picks for best of the generation.

T Silva, Chiellini, Ramos, Pepe, Barzagli, VVD, Kompany, Varane, Godin all ahead of him.

Pique was a CB for Barca during their period of utter dominance and continued to be a force at the back for years. He had his bad moments like any defender of course, but he performed at a very high level for a long time.

However, I struggle to say "legend of the game". I agree, he is 100% in the upper echelon of Barca legends, but I do not know if one could call him a legend of the game. Was he ever the greatest CB in the world? Was he ever the best even in La Liga? I'm not so sure.

I can find fault with most if not all on this list, but we have to recognize how demanding this role is and like keepers the flaws stand out. Do you not recall how bad Silva was in WC, for example.

Ramos is mentioned about his red cards. While I’ll agree some of them were down right stupid and silly, he got a lot of them for his overly aggressive style. He also played with that aggression at RB. But that style helps intimidate the forwards and is a part of his success. And it’s nothing compared to past Spanish great CBs such as Goikoetxoe, the butcher of Bilbao or Nadal from Barcelona. Plus he made huge contributions with his heading ability, his scoring ability and his great leadership ability. To me, if Puyol is on the list, which is a must for me, then Ramos is also there.

And regarding Pepe, you can’t disregard him if you have Varane or Pique on list. i find all 3 of them comparable if you examine their prime seasons.

To me though, top of the list is Chiellini!

I still dont understand T.Silva, as Bill said, for Brazil hes overrated as? Maybe cos I didnt watch him much b4 Chelsea, n he isnt exactly great, not to mention PSG, just never convincing defensively. Definitely will see how he does at this WC
