Agnelli: 'Harmonise Leagues'
By Football Italia staff
Juventus President Andrea Agnelli suggested major Leagues all start at the same time to “harmonise European football.”
The patron has proposed several reforms to Italian football, including the introduction of B-Teams.
“I think it is necessary to find a common thread for European football, for the good of clubs and fans,” Agnelli said at a club management forum.
“During the course of a season, teams are above all busy on the national level, so we should have national Leagues that start on the same day.
“Some start very early, for example on August 10, others must later. I acknowledge in these nations there is 35 degree heat and it’s impossible to play, but starting on the same day would help harmonise European football.”

I wonder how he'd want to harmonize the winter in Russia or Switzerland or even Germany. ^^ Even outside the winter break, heavy snow often makes playing impossible there.

I'm going to go out on a limb to suggest that Agnelli doesn't care about finding harmony with everyone in Europe so much as Serie A starting two weeks earlier.

Meh, every league should follow their own schedule. As a customer it's best for me to have a wide range of products available when my preferred league is not on

More important would be harmonizing the amount of games. Spain and England have too many.

Agree 100 percent...besides some leagues arrange their calendar based on other things going on in the country, international games, and other events outside of football. i don't see what "harmonizing" brings to the table. very vague
@harmonica, italy and france have the same number of games as spain and england (not counting things like league cup or coupe de la ligue). and the coppa italia just like the spanish cup is played over two legs until the final. every league should have control of how its domestic competitions are run, that's what their fa's for

Exactly. If England feels they have to many games, they can scrap their useless League Cup.
Noone really cares about it, people claim it's an opportunity to 'play the kids' but then they complain if a manager actually does that and loses.
If Spain has too many games, they can make their league 2 teams smaller.
Noone cares about teams like Cordoba or Granada anyway, least of all in Spain itself apparently, because else they would give them a fair share of the money pie to actually make it meaningful.

i've never fancied two legged cup games besides the champions league. but i think its done that way in the interest of fairness and convenience. especially for smaller clubs and their fans when it comes to support and travel. i mean if let's say real madrid plays real union at a neutral ground like the mestalla, the union fans may not get a fair shot at enjoying the game nor the club reap some ticket benefits....and in any case, spain doesn't have a national stadium (i mean there are neutral stadiums in seville and the montjuic in barcelona but good luck convincing the madrid clubs and many others to play siingle knockout cup games over there)

Well, in the DFB-Pokal, in the first rounds the amateur clubs always have home right, which is what makes things doubly interesting. To see the big clubs on 6th division potato fields can be quite amusing. ^^

Obviously in a two legged tie it's much harder for lower division teams to pull off surprise wins.
Bayern might lose once against Vestenbergsgreuth, but not over two legs.

Do you guys realize that the entire year is jammed packed with futbol. In Spain, we have futbol on TV almost every day of the year. They have planned this out with the leaque play to be played over 3 or 4 days and the midweek (also spread out over 3 or 4 days) is either International, Europe or Copa and the very odd time when there isn't a mid week fixture, they play liga to keep on schedule for the end of May liga finish. Once the leaques are finished then it is Euro or WC, then a couple of weeks of only news futbol signings and then training camps and friendlies begin.
That's called maximizing your television revenues!!!
Isn't it about time that the Italians got with the rest of Europe and stop trying to change everyone else but themselves?

And in Germany, we usually have the winter for winter sports. Stuff like skiing, biathlon, luge, bob sleigh, ski jumping etc are pretty important here, too, so we have a football break when the weather is not ideal for football, but for other kinds of sports.

Serie A needs to *bleep* start earlier tbh, 2 games in every season and it's cut off for International break not to mention pre-season is spent playing catch up with clubs from other countries who are closer to max fitness and not fat slobs coming back from a 1 month bender.
