What is up with the team? They looked so out of sync.
3-5-2 mate. We resemble a pub team whenever we revert to this formation. Night and day between how we play with the diamond and this formation. It's like the players, barring one or two, lose their basic abilities. And the consequence result is a performance like today, or the one away to Arsenal...or the the first couple of games in the league....sigh.

Re: Manchester United 2014/2015 Premier League Season (+ CC & FA Cup)
but is the difference between the 3-5-2 and the 4-4-2 diamond that fundamental? Isn't it basically just Carrick dropping in between the CBs and fullbacks advancing, and you have the 3-5-2 instead of the 4-4-2?

Re: Manchester United 2014/2015 Premier League Season (+ CC & FA Cup)
mentality of players differ. Blind is the only player who is accustomed and has the know-how to do his job in this system.
Like for eg. in a 3-5-2 the lCB and rCB need to be knowing their roles and so as the wing backs who need to be specialists. In this particular case both Evans and Rojo basically dont know what to do when they are with the ball as they dont have that extra man dropping back (carrick or blind) to accept the pass (in a diamond). So they look sideways towards either in the direction of the center CB or to the wing backs they more often get caught in sloppy decision making. Rojo is slightly better there. At least he tries to get forward and pass it long most often. Evans on the other hand has got no clue how to play in this system.
Same goes with the midfielders.
So even though on paper its just a player dropping back and another 2 players going forward majority of these players' game get affected, as they dont basically have anyone for support which is not the case with a 4 man formation. So naturally both evans and rojo are decent to good CBs in a 4 man defense where as in a 3 man one not so.

Awful game from pretty much the whole team bar RVP and young. But a win is a win
About time LVG scraps this 352, the midfield is getting completely bypassed because the defenders are hoofing it straight to Fellaini

seems like a easy win for you guys on this Sunday, knowing that Rodgers will play some stupid formation with some weird positions of players. Otherwise it would have been a good game If Di Maria comes back, we are pretty much screwed !!

Yeah it sucks. We'll manage at home. Hopefully they should be available for the Villa away match the following week.

Re: Manchester United 2014/2015 Premier League Season (+ CC & FA Cup)
damn. di maria it seems wont be there.
Anyway Jones is a must in that back 4. If he is fit then yaaaaay... evans lately is playing like a league 2 level player. So jones.. fills me with hope before this match.
and Falcao ... oh boy!! Release the kraken!!
Same line up as above. I would prefer though van persie to play deep as well like he did in the last match. His holding up play was world class in the last outing. Need to do an encore. We dont have any pace in that 11. So we need to play to our strength here of starving them off possession and pressing high up like we did against Hull. Need to be wary of them counter attacking as Sterling and co. has got pace to burn as opposed to our players.

Re: Manchester United 2014/2015 Premier League Season (+ CC & FA Cup)
Hate to be the bringer of bad news but Van Gaal said last week
http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/dec/07/radamel-falcao-manchester-united-louis-van-gaal
Jones and Rafael have got to play with the reserves first, there hasn't been a reserves match since he made that comment. He said before, that a player has to have trained for two weeks with the first team to be up for consideration, so I hope Rafael makes it, but I think it's unlikely Jones plays he's only been back for a week.
“Yes, we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Jones will train with the team next week if everything is good. Rafael has already trained with us for one week. Also now he has to play in the second squad. I’m sorry for that but it is my philosophy and the players [should understand]. If they don’t I’m not interested.”

This Liverpool's team apparently tomorrow, according to Tony Evans (The Times), 3-4-3/3-5-2: Jones; Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren; Moreno, Allen, Gerrard, Henderson; Lallana, Sterling; Coutinho

Re: Manchester United 2014/2015 Premier League Season (+ CC & FA Cup)
I'm guessiing they'll look like this
I know Henderson isn't a RWB, but I can't think of who else will play there. He took off Lambert at half-time vs Basel and they played with no recognised striker then either. If Di Maria wasn't injured, tomorrow wouldn't have been the worst day to play 4-3-3.

Arsenal have only lost one game at home in 2014, so far, and it was to us.

De Gea; Valencia, Jones, Evans, Young; Carrick, Fellaini, Mata; Rooney; van Persie, Wilson
Looks like a diamond. Rafael not even on the bench, is he is still injured? Jones rushed back because Rojo is injured. Seriously this is more than bad luck now, we never used to get injuries like this before. Herrera dropped again too.
Anyway, hope we win today. Wilson starting we need his pace, hope he does well.

Re: Manchester United 2014/2015 Premier League Season (+ CC & FA Cup)
another 3-5-2 formation from LVG. ffs. We can destroy these by playing our normal formation at home ffs. We look out of sorts...the meltdown if we drop points today...
Wilson gets a start. No falcao..AGAIN. I'm not going to bother getting wind up about it no more, but I am very pleased that Wilson is starting. Could be the making of him today.
No Rojo too, which is odd. Jones is back playing in a 3 man defence along with Carrick and Evans. Nervous looking defence that. Not sure what Jones' condition is, but he has looked ok in this system earlier in the season. Evans worries me as usual, not sure how he'll cope with the pace LFC have injected to their squad today; Sterling, Lallana and Coutinho are their attacking options today.
We can hurt them up front, as they have changed the system. Playing the same formation as us. No doubt one of the teams, or both, may change depending how the game is going. Herrera dropped again ffs. Not fair, he keeps us ticking at home, and links the play well. Mata retains his spot, better step it up in a big game today.
I'm still baffled why we reverted to this formation if we have Jones back.
Man United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Evans, Young, Carrick, Fellaini, Mata, Rooney, van Persie, Wilson.
