Re: 2015 Women's World Cup
Switzerland vs Japan is coming up now!
12 players of the German Bundesliga in this match - 4 starting for Japan and 8 starting for Switzerland. The Swiss captain normally plays for Bayern München, this year's German champion.

Re: 2015 Women's World Cup
Japan are the current World Champions for a reason. 7 of their starters belonged to the team that won in 2011.
By the way, the Japanese goalie is a giant! Erina Yamane is 1.87m tall o_O
(Swiss Gaelle Thalmann is only 1.69m)
Ouch. I hope she didn't get injured - she just came from an ACL rupture a few weeks ago.

Not to get into stereotypes, but she probably is one of the tallest in Japan

Re: 2015 Women's World Cup
The Swiss keeper is a head shorter... XD
Japan 1:0 Switzerland
The penalty was valid. Thalman only hit the Japanese striker.

They just showed a slomo repeat where one could see it. I first thought it wasn't a pen too. Kudos to the ref that she noticed right away.

Think Japan are technically the best team I've seen so far.

Re: 2015 Women's World Cup
They already were in 2011. One needs to see whether they can keep up with their fitness as they have an average age of more than 28 by now.
And that was close for Switzerland!
Not bad considering that this is the first ever World Cup match that Switzerland play.

Re: 2015 Women's World Cup
That should have been a goal for the Swiss there. Some last ditch defending and an unfortunate slip on the turf scuppered the chance though.

Re: 2015 Women's World Cup
Fun fact: Rachel Rinast who was born in Bad Segeberg (Germany) was first called up for the Swiss Nati during the Algarve Cup in March 2015 as her club coach phoned the Nati coach to tell her that Rinast has not only German, but also Swiss nationality (no one in Switzerland knew that fact) as she has a Swiss mother. So Rinast was tested during the Algarve cup and taken along to the World Cup right away. Today she got only her 7th cap.

Very nice match and Switzerland was just too wasteful.

i'm a Canadian so if I find it insulting to call it a embarrassment...deal with it
You're right. I'm sorry about that and should have worded it better. I didn't mean it to come off that way. I'm just frustrated with FIFA and Fox's coverage here.

Re: 2015 Women's World Cup
Anyhow exciting game by the USA today. But tactically it needs to get much better. Wambach really shouldn't start. Maybe come on as a sub, because he got seriously gassed this game. The second half she was running like Pirlo in a field of molasses. Also she and leroux did not work or communicate well at all. Didn't play off each other
Also if Rapinoe wants to be the roaming AM then other players need to be more positionally disciplined. Use the width of the pitch more. If you are planning on just hoofing it to your 9 the whole match it doesn't make any sense to play everything through the middle
It's hard to decide whether or not the WotM was Solo or Rapinoe. Rapinoe was amazing at times and two great goals, but without Solo that game could have been done in 30 minutes. Goal keeping at this level is so important. Positionally I think it's the most noticeable difference between the men's. I think Germany and USA have such a huge advantage in this cup due to their goal keeping alone. We'll see how this keeps up though.

Anyone else tuning in for England vs France? Kicks of in 10 minutes.
Fun stat: England haven't beaten France in 15 games.

Decent opening 15 minutes for England. Looking pretty solid. No chances to speak of yet.
Not the easiest conditions at the moment.

Re: 2015 Women's World Cup
France well on-top by the end of that half. Le Sommer got fantastic power in her shot, but I thought Bardsley could have done better to stop it. England aren't offering anything on the counter, being far too reliant on Aluko's pace when she's so isolated.
I know France are a much better team, but I hope to see England trouble them a bit more in the second half.
