Good question, why Argentina did not hire him back. He took job of Colombia in 2012. So right after the disaster of Maradona in 2010 it was still possible to hire him.
However i do not think Sabella is doing any worse. The advantage of pekerman in 2006 was he had an encredibly good number of players as well. Look at our 23 men squad back then. Even a star Messi spent entire time on bench.
This time its completely oppositie. So i doubt even with Pekerman there would be huge difference this time around. Ofcourse if you are talking of him being coach for long time, thats different. May be he would be able to bring out new talent, as BC mentioned his contribution for the youth set up.

If Argentina fail to win it this time which is very much likely, do you think Sabella should be replaced? What about Tata/ Sampaoli coaching Albiceleste? In my opinion, both are better than Sabella.

I think given the present squad, it's unfair to judge Sabella.

I was thinking beyond this world cup. Sabella didnt help himself by not calling Caballero, Fazio, Musacchio, Pastore. Argentina are lucky to have been drawn into the easiest group and have a relatively free passage to semi. So, even with this squad I think not reaching semi should be termed as a huge failure.

If Sabella fails then I think he might quit himself. If not then he either will be given a chance to manage Argentina for Coppa America next year or forced to resign.

Maybe Tata can manage Argentina next

part of me wants argentina not to win the WC so that Sabella can go and we can get someone who won't (hopefully) pick favourites: Tata, Sampaoli, Simeone(eventually). Maxi has 0 business in our NT squad, far less the starting 11

Tata is no way an upgrade to Sabella.....atleast that is what i believe from watching him at Barca.....No idea about Sampaoli.....But i really believe we need a coach like Simeone IF we want to win WC even though we might not be that entertaining under him. The guy is a tactical genius and knows how to bring the best out of his players...... we win this time or not i really wish we go for him for the next worldcup....

Because Maxi would make the team defensively more solid on the right I guess, since Di Maria has the left side, Gago needed to take care of the right if 4-3-3. And still not sure if Lavezzi is the coach's favourite, seems unlikely.

I don't think the midfield is all that worrying. Just replace Gago with Enzo. I'm sure Enzo will at least not spectate the match.

The defense on the other hand... if we make these kinds of errors against Switzerland imagine Hazard or Robben against Fernandez... and we won't even have GOAT Rojo at LB any more...

firstly, you omitted the workhorse Mashcherano. He is irreplaceable from this squad. Secondly you put Enzho and Biglia in the mid, two new players none of whom have game time even not much in friendly. It will collapse as soon as the game goes in high intensity mode. they will just lack in experience. Thirdly, you have put Aguero who is injured and even if not is far from his WC qualifier performance.

I would not take so much risk at this moment. would simply replace Rojo with Basanta and take off Higuain for Palacio.....
