Re: The official Tennis thread
Oh man I don't want to jinx it but this is the best chance Roger has had at a major since 2012.
It's impossible for him to beat Novak in 5 sets, just doesn't have the legs. Now that he's out just needs to get himself to the final and he can always beat Murray at his best specially on grass.
He's got one of Nishikori/Cilic in the quarters if he gets through. And possibly Raonic in the semis in this side of the bracket so far. Raonic worries me a bit. On his day he's shown he can beat the best and has beaten Roger a few times and is playing his best tennis of his career atm.
On the other side really hoping Del Potro makes it far. He has a quite an easy run to the semis after beating Stan if he can continue this. Really happy for the gentle giant. Missed him a lot from the tour.

Delpo 1-1. Not sure if I trust him to go the distance yet, hard fought game.

Re: The official Tennis thread
Roger most probably gonna lose to some scrub/decent player in Nishikori or Cilic
Would love to see him make it to the final though and see if he can beat someone on the grand stage at this stage of his career who isn't Nole

Re: The official Tennis thread
And Delpo is out. Pouille vastly superior today. Delpo seems to only want to slice to protect his wrists, but that's clearly not enough at this level.
Anyways I'm just happy to see him playing again

Tennis is twice as fun when Delpo is around. Pretty much all the best olympic matches had him, and now he has the love of the US crowd. Hopefully he can go far, but his path to semis looks quite hard (Thiem and probably the Stanimal).

I'm rooting for whoever wins the match between my main man Thiem and Gentle Giant Delpo. Either can make the final tbh if Dimitrov or Nishikori or someone can knockout Murray.

Delpo gave Murray a hell of a fight for the Olympic final though, and his backhand seems to be improving every game.

Pouille beats Nadal, making it the first time since 2004 in which Nadal fails to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since 2004! Is he done?

lol he's been done for 2 years now. He's legs have gone, he was never as skillful as Roger to keep at that level after the legs have gone.

Re: The official Tennis thread
I'm not sure, he's only 30 and still recovering from injury. I feel a little bad for the guy because he is so intense and sets such a high standard for himself.
Also, I can understand the Olympics deciding a final set by tie breaker but the US Open? Seems a little cheap.
Delpo - Thiem in 30 mins

Pretty lame to win on injury, but apparently Thiem was the tennis with most games in the year so it's perhaps unsurprising

Nah he's injured. I think it's the first time since like 2005 when neither Federer nor Nadal are in a grand slam quarterfinals (or maybe it was in all 4, can't remember Federer's record earlier this year). End of an era.El Gunner wrote:Did Federer play in this?

Nah Roger missed both Roland Garros and US Open.
Made semis in both AO and Wimbledon.

Re: The official Tennis thread
Delpo-Stan is very even.
Delpo made a few unforced errors in the clutch in the tie break which is why Stan won the first set. But otherwise they are just taking turns winning their serve convincingly.
Stan is going to Delpo's backhand with his backhand, and Delpo going to Stan's forehand with his powerful forehand. The two of them re so good at their own craft that the other has no chance.
I can foresee tie breaks in every set.

Re: The official Tennis thread
I went to sleep at the 1-1, kinda bummed when I woke up to the result but Wawrinka played a perfect tactical game, very few nonforced errors and Delpo also lost a lot of calls by a hair's width. All in all I'd say Delpo has established himself as a top 10 over the past 2 months, whatever the rankings say.

Re: The official Tennis thread
If he continues this good form next year he'll get in the top 10 very easily.
Serena knocked out in the semi again in the US Open
Wozniacki has a real shot at winning a slam here. She needs to beat easily the second best female player atm in Kerber.
Kerber could win her her second slam and make 3rd slam final this year. What a year she's had.
