isco was awful, he just had some decent cover on 1st half, not even great def.

and all of his passes, ball control and even dribbling fail miserably tonight.

Pepe isn't getting enough credit imo. I understand why everyone hates him but he was top class today. It's no coincidence that as soon as he went off Bayern started really threatening us for the first time. I hate to say it but the only one in defense I thought wasn't special today was Ramos.

Italy didn't play with a 10 man wall against Spain. And if you are referring to the 2-2 draw against Real Madrid, then that was mostly because of luck. Real Madrid were completely outplayed.

And who has been talking about the nature of the game? You said that it was good that effective football won over possession based football, something I didn't agree because that would make football boring as hell..

I think jibbers answered your claim pretty well so i just refer you to his answer. outplayed or not that was done want it? Thats the point i was trying to make to counter the claim you made as the only way to deal with defensive football balanced football. Not sure if you understood it or not

Just want to say that Xabi had his best game in a Madrid shirt.

Modric was our best player in possession.

Ramos and Pepe cleaned up every cross that came in side.

Isco was a great outlet all night.

Coentrao and Carvajal were great against Robben and Ribery respectively.

The midfield and defence were the key in the first leg. Now it's up to our attack and St, Iker to book our flights to Lisbon. If we score Bayern will need to score three goals and that is when we will depend on Iker.

Carvajal is a good 1v1 defender, he is very quick and reacts well, what he sucks at his awareness and position. But seeing as Ribery is complete shit off the ball, and Bayern hardly play through balls wide on his side in particular, not surprised carvajal contained him.

Will Nick finally praise Modric? Is Bayern considered a team with a "decent" midfield?
I wonder...

Coentrao was easily the MOTM imo. Made the vital goal and dealt with Robben/Rafinha and then Lahm superbly despite Isco's pathetic performance on both ends.

@Valkyrja

That's your opinion. I feel Coentrao is smarter with regards to whether to attack or defend.

I'll be honest with you, Madrid's cbs are no worse than any top side playing today. Today they did well because they had cover. Obviously when a cb is isolated by an attacker they should in theory lose, especially when going up against the high end attackers. Like Lewa showed against Pepe last year, who was directly at fault for 2 of the goals. When they have help from the mf it is much easier for them to defend. Look at Chelsea, do you think Cahill and Terry are amazing? Mope, they play in a very compact team were the spaces between the lines are squeezed for attackers, especially at Stamford Bridge where the pitch is smaller. Now when they play 'small' sides, look what happens, there is more risk up front and suddelny they make more errors.

I actually feel people are too harsh on Ramos. Look at Kompany as well, he is supposedly (according to the English media) the best cb on the planet () Isolate him and he looks average. I also think that Mullers movement is what caused you to look shaky in the end. Mandzukic was too static and he was never going to win aerial battles against both Pepe and Ramos by himself. They had someone to mark and noone was dragging them away. I've never seen a Guardiola team lack this much tactical nous before. Hopefully he learns, but it is far too late I fear in this tie.

Absolute pile of shit. Lazy *bleep*, standing around, slowing down, never sprinting, never running, not doing anything.

Worse game than yesterday. Real was ridiculous, but we were even more ridiculous.

Huge brainfart from Boateng for the goal. How can he let that pass through. It's right there in front of his feet. That wasn't even a counter, that was just nonexisting defending.

What is the atmosphere like in Munchen atm? What did Pep say in the post match press conference? You guys are in dire need of CBs who can read the game. Badstuber needs to come back.

Real Madrid 1-0 Bayern München - First Leg - Page 17 Empty Re: Real Madrid 1-0 Bayern München - First Leg

Post by Onyx Wed Apr 23, 2014 11:33 pm

Carlo Ancelotti had no complaints after Real Madrid’s 1-0 Champions League first-leg win over Bayern Munich.

Karim Benzema’s first-half goal gave Madrid victory while a resolute defensive performance ensured a clean sheet with the second-leg to come in Munich next week.

“I’m happy with everything, with the result and the performance of the players because the game was difficult,” AS reports Ancelotti as saying after the match.

“We were timid at first and while we had difficulties in the second-half we had more control of the game. We defended but we have done very good things.

“It was essential to work together. Fabio Coentrao had the help of Isco and Dani Carvajal had Angel Di Maria. You need this in a semi-final.

“We were more comfortable defending in 4-4-2 against teams that have a lot more of the ball.

“Our defending was good and we did well with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale at 50%.

“It’s not easy to be as good as Cristiano was. He wanted to play and he played well.

“The game there will be very difficult and we have to play with the desire and confidence of today. I don’t know what will happen but I’m confident.”

Pep Guardiola is more confident of Bayern Munich reaching the Champions League final than before despite the first-leg defeat to Real Madrid.

The Coach added after the 1-0 reverse that he is proud of his players for their performance, Sport has reported.

“I’m more optimistic now than before playing this game,” he told German television.

“We did everything to win but you can always lose when you’re against great players like these.

“We’ve lost in a respectable manner.

“They have a lot of legs and are the best team in the world on the break. The match was how they wanted it.

“The ball was going faster, faster returns, more verticality, and in that, they are better.

“In Munich we’ll give everything to win. We played against a team with the most expensive players in the world.

“We have done well but the result is not satisfactory. Next week at the Allianz Arena we need to flip the tie.

“I am proud of my team. We played well against one of the best teams in the world.

“Hopefully we can keep improving for the second-leg.”

No idea. They were smiling, saying they played reasonably well etc. Pep said the usual, it was hard, not bad, important to dominate etc pp

Let's be honest. We were terrible. Real were really bad too, but they still made us look like complete idiots.
All in all a game of shockingly bad quality.
'Dominating' gtfo. Passing around the ball, never creating anything, and every 15 minutes lose the ball once and it's a huge Real opportunity. Ridiculous way to play a game.

They're playing like seniors in a retirement home. I don't think I saw one of our players sprint ONCE.

Pep may say he's content, probably he indeed wants us to play it safe away from home, which imo is COMPLETELY unnecessary - no reason we couldn't win against a Real which is really less than impressive.
But we never did anything towards that end, only after Müller was on.
But I don't believe he's content at all.

We are in a slump. Since a couple of months almost everything is gone from our game. It's pretty bad, imo, but even with that pedestrian zone autopilot we get decent results so far Laughing

Pep needs to step it up, but maybe the players are saturated and need to be eliminated from the CL to remember the basics.

Also, we've got a big problem that Thiago is injured and Götze is out of form. That means both our new additions are missing. But they are needed to make our Pep-style fluid. And there's no new input into our team from last year which isn't as hungry as last year anymore.

With only Kroos and Schweini it's just too slow and static.

Manzukic is great in the air, but against Pepe and Ramos, REALLY? That's the plan, play high crosses on Mandzukic?
Of course the only times we came close to being dangerous was when we STOPPED whipping crossess towards Mandzukic and played our way into the box
Our players can do it, really well, they did it all the time end of last year, but now they look like they don't know how to do it anymore.

Ribery is completely out of form. Robben is trying like Don Quixote lol. They put 2-3 players to his left side, his right side is useless as everyone knows. For that he got a lot done and was still by far the best player. Alaba was good too.

Pep keeps getting the line ups wrong in big games. It's funny, but it's true. That's the 4th or 5th time now where you can say he got the lineup wrong. Hindsight is a great thing of courses, but still.
