RIP Southampton
Nicola Cortese, Saints' chairman has resigned. Pochettino is expected to follow immediately, and a lot of players who were part of project because of the 2 are expected to hand in transfer request.
Why has this all happened ? Katharina Leibherr' father was Southampton's owner. He died very recently, and his daughter, Katherina, has installed HERSELF as chairman. Cortese who basically ran the strings for Southampton to get from League 1, to solid mid-table PL in 3 seasons, goes in disagreement. Katherina has zero ineterest in football, and just wants to cash up by selling players and then selling the team. \
Perfect time for Arsenal to play them then.... . Also players like Lallana, Shaw, Clyne, Schneiderlin, etc all could leave this winter or summer in latest.
Sad for Saints' fans, but maybe now we can pounce (and a lot more hopeful of our visit to St. Mary's in March since Pochettino's system is the perfect counter to Rodgers' ) .

Simon Clancy @SiClancy 16m
Southampton a very sobering tale. Power and cash hungry owner takes over, chairman leaves, manager to follow & firesale of players expected.
Simon Clancy @SiClancy 15m
@samhuxley Which part? Pochettino will almost certainly resign and owner not a football fan and is happy to sell club & players ASAP.

Re: RIP Southampton
Football Italia wrote:Nicola Cortese has resigned as Southampton executive chairman and is heavily linked with a move to Milan.
The news of Cortese’s interest in a job within Milan’s new club structure emerged over the last few days and has been gaining traction.
It received a huge boost this evening Southampton releasing a statement confirming Cortese’s exit.
"With great regret we have accepted the resignation of Mr Cortese,” announced owner Katharina Liebherr.
Cortese is a former banker who helped negotiate the club’s purchase in 2009.
Milan are already undergoing massive changes at the moment, as tomorrow new Coach Clarence Seedorf will take over after flying in from Brazil, where he terminated his playing career.
He replaces sacked Coach Massimiliano Allegri, while director Ariedo Braida also left on January 1 after 20 years at San Siro.
CEO Adriano Galliani was recently downgraded to joint-CEO with Barbara Berlusconi, the daughter of President Silvio Berlusconi.
Milan eh?

Re: RIP Southampton
If she's looking to sell the club, hopefully she manages to do that ASAP.
I don't really believe there's going to be a firesale of players, though. How would that make sense? That she just pockets the transfer fees herself? But the club is worth much more when it's in the Premiership than in the Championship. She should just look to sell it ASAP, if that's what she wants, and not touch anything else.

Thats what lm thinking. She'd be harming herself by selling all the players. Who wants to buy a team for a premium price thats in need of a complete rebuild? Thats like trying to sell a house, but smashing the windows, floor and walls with a sledgehammer , selling the tubs, washers, dryers and any installations of value and expecting to get the same amount of the sale.
Though ownerships of teams like Southampton seem to always do the shortsighted, illogical things that completely ruin whatever progress the team has made. So any decision no matter how stupid wouldnt surprise me.

Re: RIP Southampton
Southampton are not getting relegated. They're safe with a 12 point lead on the relegation zone.
By selling everyone and slashing the wage structure to nothing, you're basically selling a club that the next owner can do whatever he wants with:
- media rights will get you 40+ mil in rev
- You can buy any player you want
I'm a private equity guy. To me, that's an extremely attractive investment. I get to apply my vision immediately andi have no liabilities to deal with.

Gutted with that news, but would just like to thank Nicola Cortese for everything he has done for me and the club! All the best to him!

Re: RIP Southampton
I am sorry for this, Southampton was an interesting project, clubs as Southampton make a balanced league.
I image a crowd for Lallana and Shaw
while Osvaldo and Ramirez destined for a return to Serie A.That is their dimension.

Massive overreaction here, you guys are acting like the owner just packed up and left.
Cortese was the chairman but he had nothing to do with the financial clout of the club.
This won't change anything major, the biggest thing it could change is Pochettino might leave but that's it.
The mere idea that there might be a firesale is just

A lot of their recent big signings signed BECAUSE of Pochettino, and Cortese was the main culprit of their success of the last 3 years.
Had a look at their forums....it's meltdown among the Saints.
