It's always risky revisiting your old favorites. Sometimes you'll fall in love again, while other times it'll destroy your nostalgia. And sometimes you're just like "meh, whatever". At least you got to see your old friend.
It seems like you have the shittiest luck with rap shows. Personally, I'm ridiculously introverted so music concerts aren't for me. I went to carnaval in Rio once because my friends wanted to go and I hadn't seen them in a while and it was one of the worse experiences of my life. Loud, shitty music and thousands of people standing (dancing maybe?) shoulder to shoulder. It was the stuff of nightmares.
Jurassic 5 are great though but what do you mean by darker stuff?

Finished listening to the entirety of Documentary. Game His best work since the first Documentary Album of the year is still To Pimp A Butterfly for me but this was great. If only Game was like this for his entire career.

Yeah you have to consider 2/2.5 as just Doc 2. Game said he wished he left the .5 part off, it's just Doc 2.
But it's like 39 songs and ~30 are quality. It's like an 9/10 for me. Too early to say it's a classic but I think it might end up as one.

While these are his two best, imo he has been like this his whole career, he has never dropped a bad album. Year of the Wolf was mediocre but I consider that a comp album and it still has bangers:

Animal ambition was so crap. Waiting for street king immortal but 50 could have already peaked though.

Year of the Wolf was a disgrace. Can't believe Game had to put that compilation album on such a good discography.
Doc2 is his best album since DA & might go down as a classic but it's not aoty. Nothing will top TPAB. Highest rated album this year & one of the highest rated of all time. It'll easily win Raoty with no Wacklemore to steal it again (:
Taylor Swift will probably win AOTY ahead of him cause Grammy hates rap (:

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Loved the hunger in Game's voice in Doc 2. Agree with the assessment that he's never put out a 'bad' album. After Doc 1 it was consistently good. Doc 2 will never touch Doc 1 but it's his best effort since that.
Loved the Dre influence in it, especially right after Compton. Relevance = through the roof atm.
But TPAB is undoubtedly AOTY. Doc 2 is 8-9/10, TPAB is 12/10.
But, as said above, Tay Tay is taking it because fux Kendrick ynot.

2014 Forest Hills Drive won Album Of The Year on BET Awards.
Amazing what Cole accomplished with his album. Released it without any promotion or fanfare, no singles and it is the first rap album in 25 years to go platinum without any features. I think it's more than safe to say that J Cole lived up to his hype.

No. Not at all. On the album front anyway.

I disagree. We were discussing Game never releasing any bad albums and I say the same for J Cole too, counting his mixtapes. Friday Night Lights and Forest Hills Drive are classics in my book.

Cole World: Sideline Story - OK
Born Sinner - Bad
2014 Forest Hills Drive - Great
That's just OK to me. Coming off The Come Up, Warm Up and FNL, those albums do not compare in the slightest (except FHD).
If you were to rank them, Cole World and Born Sinner would be the bottom 2. You have to outdo your mixtapes or at least match them. With the hype that came with Cole off those mixtapes, I can't say he's lived up to it just yet.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
We have to agree to disagree. I rate Born Sinner higher than Cole World and I like Cole World. Friday Night Lights was hard to top, it was basically an album released as a mixtape because his label believed it won't sell well. I count that and FHD as classics.

It's weird, like overall it's just pretty good probably 'cause of the remixes, but the tracks that are good are very good.
I really like:
Bigger Than Me, Really, Fvck Your Feelings, Married To The Game, The Purge, Trouble On My Mind, Cellphone, Food For My Stomach, Hit Em Hard, Black on Black.
the rest? meh
edit: Kevin Gates is underrated

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Cole definitely hasn't failed or anything but I also expected him to become great after hearing his early mixtapes The Warm Up, Come Up and FNL. I really liked Sideline Story, about as much as FHD even. Born Sinner was a disappointment but still had some nice tracks ie Let Nas Down.
Overall his mixtapes have been better than his albums imo. The Warm Up is a classic mixtape.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
I still maintain that Born Sinner was a bit too long, there were songs that took down the strength of the album that he could have just cut out of the album.
Still loved it though, again for the most part. It had a few of my favourites songs that year with radio banger Power Trip, and then rest like Rich Niggaz, Niggaz Know, Let Nas Down, Forbidden Fruit, Trouble, Chaining Day.
