Capital One Cup · Quarterfinals - Sunderland vs Chelsea
Chelsea will make another long trip to the Northeast to face off against Sunderland for the second time in as many weeks to contest the Quarterfinals of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, December 17th.
-
The sides have gotten here via a pair of wins over Southampton and Arsenal respectively in their Round 4 ties. Sunderland beat high-flying and heavily-favoured Southampton 2-1 at the Stadium of Light in one of the first matches under new manager and former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet, while the Blues beat London rivals Arsenal 2-0 through goals from Spanish duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Mata.
-
The meeting between the two sides 2 weeks ago ended a 7-goal thriller. A brilliant performance from Chelsea's Eden Hazard capped off with a brace from the Belgian helped Chelsea to a hard-fought 3 points over a highly impressive Black Cats side, who following that showing will certainly see themselves as well in with a chance come Tuesday should they be able to put on an equivalent reprise performance.
Doubtful for the home side are midfielder Jack Colback and defender Carlos Cuellar, while Chelsea will be without Branislav Ivanovic following the Serb's yellow card - his fifth of the season - in the Blues' 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday. Also absent for the visitors, through injury, are seldom-used Ryan Bertand, and, potentially, Gary Cahill, of whom José Mourinho mysteriously said ahead of his side's Saturday league fixture, "he is not injured but almost injured with pain in quadriceps".
The match kicks off at 19.45 GMT

Would love a good cup run despite it being the MM trophy. What other big teams are still in it?

Gus Poyet plans Cup shock against Chelsea:
Gus Poyet has challenged his Sunderland players to boost their Premier League survival hopes by dumping Chelsea out of the Capital One Cup

"If we want to get out of the relegation zone, we need to become winners, winning football games, and to become winners, we need to win the next one, so let's see if we can use it for that reason."
"It's important. It's a cup competition. We are losing a little bit of belief in England in the cups because of course, the Premier League or the Champions League means everything."
"It's a competition and you cannot start the season thinking, 'I won't care about this one, I will care a little bit about this one and only care properly about this one'."
"It's just about playing and becoming winners. A winner is somebody who wins most of the time, and that's what we are trying to achieve here."

HT: 0-0
Snoozefest. Not so much as a single half-chance created by either side.

FT: Sunderland 2-1 Chelsea
Staggeringly, embarrassingly bad. We're getting worse, not better.

Which is still better than Sunderland's first. No excuses. That was garbage.

No but do you expect them to be in any sort of form with Mourinho's rotation?
