The insult was supposed to be ironic due to it being in the happy new years thread where they restored everybody back to 100%. That doesn't mean it wasn't deserved, though. I'll be back to 100 in a week or so.

My return to this thread. Hope you've all been having a good holidays thus far.

HOBBIT SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU HAVEN'T READ WHICH I ASSUME EVERYONE HAS ANYWAY.

I saw the Desolation of Smaug the other day and I must say in relation to the rankings people were making of the films, that this is among the best as an actual film but it's possibly the worst actual adaptation of Tolkien's work. It essentially took the major landmarks of the middle of the book - arriving at Beorn's, making it to the forest, straying from the path, the encounter with the spiders, capture by the elves, procuring freedom through Bilbo, escape using the barrels, revealing themselves in Laketown, finding the door, meeting with Smaug - and used them as stepping stones to guarantee the authenticity of the tale. Yet the writers saw fit to change almost every actual detail with careless abandon as long as it led to the same destination as the book. Whilst I am all for giving screenwriters freedom in adapting for the big screen, it seemed as if they had reached a tipping point where they no longer cared anymore. That being said, what they created was a highly enjoyable romp, though I still can't decide whether I find the dwarf/elf romance subplot hilarious or infuriating.

That ending though. I'd spent all year adamant that the film had to finish with Bard slaying Smaug, leaving film 3 to deal with the battle of Five Armies, as otherwise Smaug's demise would have to be either drawn out or awkwardly fast to begin the next film. They just couldn't resist the cliched cliffhanger ending in the second film of a trilogy though.

Also I agree that Fellowship doesn't get nearly enough love, as a film it's simply majestic, though I feel that the finality offered by Return of the King gives it an appeal that is unavailable to the other films.
