Marseille U19 1 Arsenal U19 4: Gnabry stars again as young Gunners set the bar in France... and 15-year-old Hinds catches ey
Arsenal's senior side will be hoping to mirror the result of their Under 19 side after they beat Marseille 4-1 in the South of France.
Arsene Wenger's side take on the Ligue 1 club on Wednesday evening at the Stade Veledrome, and the French boss will have been impressed by his younger generation.
Serge Gnabry bolstered his reputation with a double, while Alex Iwobi and Jack Jebb also got on the scoresheet.
It was the Gunners' first appearance of the newly-structured youth league, and they were hoping to gain revenge on a Marseille side who beat them in the Next Gen series last season.
They got off to the perfect start, Iwobi cooly slotting the passed the keeper after eight minutes.
Both sides were struggling to get a passing game going on a bobbly surface, but two goals in a matter of minutes from the away side helped all-but-sealed the three points.
Gnabry grabbed his first of the game after good work by Kris Olsson, before doubling his tally with a thumping finish.
Goalkeeper Deyan Iliev had a moment to forget with twenty minutes to go though, completely fluffing a simple backpass into his own net to give the French side their first goal of the afternoon.
Jebb set out on raising the morale of the 'keeper, netting a fourth after the Marseille keeper fumbled.
Late on, with the game out of sight, 15-year-old Kaylen Hinds came on and showed glimpses of promise. Hinds featured many times for the Under 18 side at just 14 years of age.
The star of the show was certainly Gnabry though, and it is perhaps a surprise that the 18-year-old German prospect wasn't selected for the senior side for their European opener.

Looks like Bayern didn't manage to buy out the best talent from other BuLi teams for their youth ranks. They'd rather just pay the release clauses of the Götzes than develop their youth.Arquitescu wrote:

Re: Official UEFA Youth league thread
Actually nobody in Germany gives a shit about the youth CL (Just take a look at the results of ALL German teams). The overriding opinion is that the UEFA U19 is a joke (words from the Bundesliga CEO himself) because it endangers youth development in favour of commercialization. Were talking about a competition for an age group where the overriding majority will be in their last year of high school and you're asking them to play matches during the week?

Re: Official UEFA Youth league thread
Unfortunately, that's a very narrow view Phritz. If these kids harbour ambitions to be professional footballers, they can only benefit from playing squads from other countries with different philosophies and styles.Phritz wrote:Actually nobody in Germany gives a shit about the youth CL (Just take a look at the results of ALL German teams). Re: Official UEFA Youth league thread
No, forcing students to play during the school week is downright irresponsible. Are you honestly trying to say that's being narrow-minded? The only reason the youth CL exists is because of the marketability of NexGen and UEFA is trying to cash in on that success.

Which obviously caters to the English kids endangering their education, while the German youth players mostly even complete their Abitur (A-levels) to be able to attend a university later on.aleumdance wrote:lol, in england the youth play their fa youth cup matches in the week days..

Re: Official UEFA Youth league thread
Aleumdance, first of all GCSE's are done at 16. Also, GCSE's are pretty easy, e.g. Passing GCSE math is only enough knowledge to do ⅓ of IGCSE maths. Second of all, the workload of A-Levels is nothing compared to the Abitur lol.

Marketability? I doubt youth league has any profit at all.Phritz wrote:No, forcing students to play during the school week is downright irresponsible. Madrid beat PSG and Schalke beat Chelsea to reach UEFA Youth league semis.
The other two Quarter-Finals,Barca-Arsenal and City-Benfica are yet to be played.
(I think Barca-Arsenal is going on right now)

Re: Official UEFA Youth league thread
FT Barcelona 4-2 Arsenal. Was 2-2 till the 89th minute.
We dominated most of the game but Adama is a monster and pretty much won Barca the game. Was involved in most of the goals and the sending of our keeper.
Kaptoum another barca player who was outstanding. Mounir was good. The guy who was subbed in later at LW(Japanese player?) was good. Rest were pretty meh and can't see any of them make it.
For Arsenal, Gnabry was outstanding along with Toral, Olsson, Bellerin and Akpom.
Both sides missed a penalty each.

Very proud of our boys, they've been quite good so far. I actually didn't think they would reach the semis but they proved me wrong

Re: Official UEFA Youth league thread
German and Italian teams have a disadvantage considering both governing footballing bodies stress an obscene amount on the youth's studies to which tremendously cuts down the time they have to train along with the absurd timings of the matches themselves.

They won a couple of games in the last minutes and had to play with a man down alot of the times as well. Such fight and hunger
