Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
Arsenal will apparently sign striker Ciprian Marica on a free.
His agent says he's close to Arsenal.

All these overpriced signings are the best in the world? They really are not.
And yes I do blame the clubs. If there is a bidding war, no shame in that. But who the in the world contested Man City 28m for Milner? Come on now.
And while do Arsenal need to sign a top player? How about someone who is close to one and may eventually become on?
Who said Milner cost £28M?
Milner cost £20M and Stephen Ireland.
How much is Stephen Ireland worth currently?
Nothing I guess.
And 20m is still too much, he is worth like 10.
He's worth what someone will pay for him.
Makes sense.
Any other cliches out there which you find particularly useful in this situation?

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
It's not a cliche though... everything you sell is ultimately worth what someone's willing to pay for it at that time. The market may subsequently move up and you feel like you got a good deal or the market for that player may go down and you may feel that you made a bad investment. But at the specific time the transaction goes down, that's the market price.
And btw, what's the alternative? Are you going to assign random prices to players? That would get thrown out in court so quickly that you wouldn't be able to blink.

Look, you can come up with any justification that exists. Paying 20 or possibly 28 for Milner is totally criminal and if thats the choice Wenger has, pay this kind of money for decent players, or sign kids...the choice to me is obvious.
Assign random prices? What? You've lost me.
All I am saying is, pay what is reasonable or dont pay, if your Wenger. If your stupid like many clubs and have the money to waste, go for it.
Bayern paid half the price for Shaqiri (at least) that City got Milner..and anyone with two eyes can see who is better (and alot younger too). This notion you just have no choice but to get robbed, I dont agree with.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
When Llorente was sold for free and Tevez was sold for 12m I don't think I agree with the statement that Wenger has a choice of overspending or signing kids. There are fair prices, even bargains, out there. Finding them is harder.
Milner is British and as such he carries a hefty premium like all other British players purchased by British teams. So I don't think his case is that representative.

Juventus had to achieve to make both those moves possible and they had to spend to achieve. I think it's all a big circle of shit. Spend>win>attract>compete

Didnt say those where his only two choices. I meant that people are always moaning about him buying kids..but their suggested alternatives are often overpriced players...like Higuain (dont fight me on that BC)
Milner isnt the only example either, im sure you can think of many others.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
People on both sides of this conversation seem focused on the extremes instead of trying to approach it logically. There are bargains out there, you don't always have to pay over the odds for top players. But Milner also isn't a good example of what we're talking about. How about top players who are established, since this conversation is focusing on Suarez and Higuain? The prices have gone up on those, so Wenger has the choice to either buy them for what they're valued at, or not buy them. Considering that ST is currently the weakest part of that team (at least in my opinion), he can either sign another Giroud at a decent price, or he can pay over the odds (35-40m for Higuain or 50-55m for Suarez) and improve his team. Obviously that's his decision, but I think most Arsenal fans would agree with me when I say that the latter is preferable if they want to compete for the title.
Also, any talk of these types of signings bankrupting Arsenal is absurd, considering their "70m warchest." Arsenal is financially stable and can afford to buy a top player or two in their prime, and choosing not to is exactly that - a choice.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
Higuain no, Suarez yes. He bid 40m for Suarez right? That sounds like a fair enough price. But if people complain he wont go and sign Higuain for 35...I dont really understand them.
This "70m warchest" is obviously paper talk nonesense. They clearly have some money, they can get a couple great players and they probably should...but I just dont agree with people moaning at him for not overspending. As you said, thats his choice and I think the right one quite often.
Every situation is different because the player is always different, that goes without saying by now.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
That may sound like a fair enough price to you, but it got rejected. So Wenger now has a choice: do you bid more than what's "fair" in order to improve your team, or do you stick with the exact same squad you had last year? If you think smart bids and financial awareness are more important to a manager's quality than winning, then fine, deciding not to sign a striker is the right choice. Personally, I prefer spending a little extra money to get your man and risking signing a flop, and considering how Arsenal fans here have been begging for Suarez to come, it seems they agree.

Every summer transfer window the press in England report that Arsenal have a huge warchest yet they end up selling key players and spending modest amounts.
I hope they sign Suarez as he'd take them from a club challenging for 4th, to a club challenging for 1st/2nd.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
Those are not his only two choices.
He could just go and sign someone else for a fair amount.
Thats not to say he shouldnt go a bit higher on Suarez, I think he should and is probably considering it.
But to him, Suarez is kicking and screaming out of Liverpool (or so it seems), he will miss 6 or 8 games of the seasons (I dont remember) and even when he comes back he is a risk to get suspended again because he is clearly crazy. So I think its logical he has to think for a minute how much higher he wants to go here.
All im saying. You speak as if I am saying they should sign noone and they cant sign anyone...which is clearly not what im saying. And Wenger isnt even saying that.

Who? The market has shaken out while he was assessing his options, and now there's nobody left out there. It's a seller's market in the ST position, and his wait-and-see game has put him in this position. If you can name me one player you think will definitively improve their starting XI that they could pick up for reasonable money right now, I'll concede the entire argument. But I don't believe that option exists right now, and if he had bid 25-30m for Higuain back in early June instead of trying to force a bargain, he wouldn't be in this position now.

Suarez is traveling with the squad to Norway for the friendly against Valerenga. He will be assessed before the match.
