Yeah, I agree, the leader/best player in the team should get the most criticize of any player.

However, lets not ignore the fact Messi was getting hated on long before the Copa and has been treated pretty unfairly by some Argentina fans for aslong as I can remember really.

Messi was never a natural leader, that's what makes him different to maradona. He is pretty introverted where footballers are concerned and that is the antithesis to leadership. An introverted person+a lot of attention+criticism= a lot of mental instability

Messi has the potential to drive the team forward by example, and has done so before but by no sense of the term does he have nerves of steel, for example against Arsenal in 09/10 Barcelona went down a goal and how did he respond? scored a piledriver from outside the box and goes on to score a super hattrick. but as we saw vs Colombia the pressure of a country on one mans shoulders would get to only the most determined of men, you could see him frustrated and he showed it by hitting a free kick into the stands and nearly tearing up afterwards

Your own fans booing you and showering so much negativity on you can affect anyone. Messi is anyway softer than some others. Also the press make it worse for him by exaggerating everything. Sometimes it seems as if the Argentine public and press are the biggest enemies of the national team and indirectly of themselves.
