Re: Summer Transfer Thread
I can't see united out bidding simply because of our relationship with Vitesse.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread
Heard from someone who gets an awful lot of things right that Van Ginkel should be done next week, Cavani is still very much a possibility contrary to reports of the last 2 days of the supposed "final bid", and that the club will bid for Alex McCarthy. He has a pretty good track-record so I'm eager to see if these things do turn out to be true.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread
Alex McCarthy is basically another Turnbull.
Oh well, part of a relegated squad so he'll be cheap.
The only thing missing from that is a possible DM.
I hope your source is correct.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread
I don't know enough of McCarthy to say myself. I only saw one game of his late into last season (you probably know which one I'm talking about) where he was superb. Other than that, no idea.
As for the guy, calling him 'my source' might be a bit profound hahaha. He's just a guy who runs a Chelsea-related website and claims to be in regular contact with a gentleman who's employed by the club as a scout. I'm usually tremendously skeptical and duly incredulous of people making grandiose claims like that as I'm sure most are, but as I said, I've been following his claims for awhile and he does get things right 95% of the time, so we'll see.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread
Yeah, I didn't watch much of Reading simply because of how poor they were all season. I can't see him doing a better job than Turnbull though, in all honesty, I would have kept Turnbull.
We'll, you are using him as your source.

Was he not injured for most of the season?

Well, I think Federici spent most of the season ahead of him anyway.

True. His stats indicate he only featured in 13 League matches all season.

I'd prefer Federici because he pulled off some great saves this season but hey, McCarthy is English.

Which is also part of it, surely.
Personally, I though they'd go for Mark Schwarzer. Good keeper, on a free, already living in London, etc.

He is another one but I feel he is only a one to two year stop gap.
He will surely retire after the 2014 WC.

Which would be ideal. Schwarzer for 2 years, by which time Courtois will be back legitimately competing with Big Pete for the spot in the team (much like the latter with Cudicini in Mou's first stint) and Blackman will, presumably, have further improved.

The 5% he got wrong was about Laudrup?

Haha no, he never mentioned Laudrup.
That was my own reporting

Federici is a good gk.
Shame about Schwarzer, I knew he wouldn't stay around much after 2014 wc.

Good ol' Wes Sneijder has said there is nothing in the rumour about him to Chelsea. Glad that nonsense is over.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread
How happy would you guys be with These signings for our summer?
Schurrle
Gomez/Cavani
Van Ginkel
McCarthy
I think I would be okay with it as long as MVG got a decent amount of game time to prove himself. Jose would have to work tactically with Luiz, Ivanovic and Mikel though so our defence is not full of holes.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread
Would be great but I think the chances of not signing another defensive midfielder to add to the whole 1 we have already is highly unlikely.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread
For me, DM is a bit hit and miss. We can keep what we've got, hope Mikel has his normal early season form and Romeu returns to being a decent back up or we can buy someone which will basically mean the end of Romeu's career here and make it hard for Chalobah or Loftus-Cheek to make it into the first team. I am honestly torn about it.
Besides, If we buy a b2b midfielder who can pass, then we've got most of that covered anyway.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread
Mikel is average and so is Romeu, as well as unproven. I don't see Mou relying on those 2 to mount a title challenge and compete for the latter stages of Europe.

You can't deny that Mikel always starts the season off at a rate of knots and gives us hope that this season he'll continue that form.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread
Even if we are going to assume Mikel is a great player, we still only have one proven option in that position. Romeu is an unseasoned youngster who's hardly set the world alight even when he did get chance and I doubt he'll get much of a sniff under Mou. Going into a season competing on all fronts where we'll presumably be looking to compete for the title and go deep in Europe with 1 natural defensive midfielder in the entire squad is lunacy.
