Given Arsenal's history of injury problems, I am prone to stockpiling on defensive options in my armchair squad-building! Laughing

Those are fair points though, Jay. The likelihood of four CBs in their prime would probably be overkill, at least in a season where we don't see freak injuries across the back line (as has sometimes been the case in the recent past). So if there is any substance to this interest in Williams, and if Vermaelen is off ... what would be the purpose? Is it a substantial upgrade? (Some would say it's not an upgrade at all.) I wonder if it has to do with freeing up some slots for foreign players this summer ..

It could be an improvement in that we could be replacing one inconsistent defender with a more consistent one. Though Williams may not be that much, if at all, better than Vermaelen, it could be argued he's more reliable and would bring additional leadership to the squad.

At the very least, replacing Vermaelen with Williams wouldn't be a downgrade in quality.

Williams is an upgrade to Vermaelen, in my opinion. Positioning, aerial duels, passing, leadership, strength - in all those categories Williams is better. Vermaelen better tackler and is faster. 2 years of age won't make much difference, Williams doesn't rely on pace - while Vermaelen does.

as long as we sign another Younger attacker(Jovetic) alongside Villa id be very happy eco smile
