Not a fair comment at all. I think Varane is one of the better defender i have seen playing against this barca. He puts many lads to shame with the way he is playin. Kid is ice, it's like he takes less breath than other players on the pitch, sees everything, takes the best decision all the time. we are blessed

And Thiago Silva paired with Varane would probably be the most unfair partnership i can think of. I can understand why PSG are putting together something to tempt Varane, specially if they also intend to sign Mourinho.

But he is ours , deserves a very nice pay bump.

Varane is doing so well now because he never has to get sucked out and can purely sweep up using his speed, reactions and reading of the game.

Thats what Thiago does best too and I wouldnt want to change that.

Actually Silva plays up into the midfield often with PSG to help with the buildup (which is killing PSG right now btw with Silva out... Silva's playmaking). Varane would allow Silva to play even higher if he wanted to. With Alex, Silva had to cheat into the midfield and recover to defend and help Alex lol. With Sakho, he's much better off . With varane, it would be insane.

And who better to teach Varane the ropes than Silva. Varane's game is the blueprint of Milan CBs like Baresi, Nesta and Silva.

And, I wasnt trying to infere that Thiago Silva is incapable of that advanced position, I think he can do anything, hes one of the very best defenders I seen in the last decade.

As far as what Silva has the most experience in, i completely agree. But he's played the aggressive CB role to perfection at PSG this year after taking a month to adjust to it... yet to see him do it in CL against a top team though. Will probably see him against Valencia and get a good look against more gifted attack.

Don't get me wrong Varane has higher potential but I still rate Pepe higher now,he has been a world class CB for years.I think he would perform even better next to a less aggressive/more covering defender like Varane rather than Ramos.

I would've thought Mou would want to rest Varane with the other starters (Ozil, Ronaldo, Alonso,etc) and when he didn't I kind of got worried.
It would be pretty idiotic not to start Varane as he's by far out best defender.

Who ever thinks our backline has been solid the last few months just because of varane, they are wrong, yes he played a huge role in that, but the other player who shown his true form is Coentrao.

Coentrao has been absolute rock solid LB for us the past few months, I have never seen such safe LB the way he has been playing, totally mastered the defensive art of FB.

I think varane needs another partner like varane, not like pepe, ramos or silva.

Remember why Albiol-Varane worked so well and had many clean sheets, it was all because albiol also keeps his position mostly, while has an ideal square area where he attacks.

The backline of Arbeloa-Varane-Albiol-Coentrao were extremely disciplined to the point the attackers had like a moving wall standing between then and the goal.

Pepe is mistake prone and hot head. you see some impressive moves from him then he makes a mistake. for example you saw how his stupid aggressiveness cost us a CL semi final against Barca 2 years ago.

Position awareness wise, Varane is better than both of them there is no doubt. and overall he has been better than both this season. but cuz he is young and hasn't played in many big stages there are few things he should learn and that's normal for a CB at this age.

coentrao has played all season. yes he has played better the past couple months but hes not the one that has made real madrid's backline so solid recently.

hes a factor, but varane has been cleaning up everyones mistakes left and right its difficult to argue with that watching his play.

Pepe was playing midfield that game,and be honest he was a beast and we barely created anything until he got sent off.Plus he didn't actually touch Alves,he was a bit unlucky really,the ball was there to be won but he was a bit reckless.

And people are making out that Varane hasn't made mistakes? Pepe might make the odd mistake but at his best he is still your best CB IMO.

Pepe's haphazard and error prone. He's good at defending, however Varane is better overall and more composed.
