Players who ruined their legacy
Quick few off the top of my head
JT:- Media darling and was well on his way to be the GOAT English defender or at least in the conversation. Missed penalty in the CL final and all the off field allegations, reputation in tatters.
Ronaldinho & Adriano. Both got fat.
Michael Owen. We all know the story.
Shevchenko, Kaka, Figo & Fernando Torres.
Robben. Don't shoot straight at Casillas and he's easily in Holland's all time XI.
Neymar when he joins Barca.
Any more?

Because there is only one star in Barcelona and whoever comes should bow down to Messi. Legacy ruined.

Re: Players who ruined their legacy
How exactly did they ruin their legacy in Barca? Villa finally won everything in club football, Cesc is going to win his first major club trophy and Ibra, well Ibra did exactly same as elsewhere, won league and repelled Champions League.highburied wrote:Because there is only one star in Barcelona and whoever comes should bow down to Messi. How? I haven't heard him doing anything wrong or stupid.
David Beckham if he joins the wrong club.
Mourinho is in danger of ruining his repuation - or enhancing negative sides of it - this season.

Re: Players who ruined their legacy
Robben in Holland all time 11? Yeah.....no.
I dont think Figo ruined his legacy, only with Barca fans, with everyone else not at all.
Ill skip over HB's usual nonesense.
Anyways.
The biggest one I can think of is Veron. He was a magical player, coming to England ruined him.
Shaun Wright Phillips wasnt ever going to special, but his prime years were wasted sitting on the bench. Such a shame. Then again, it was his own fault for going there...but he aint alone, Zhirkov, Kezman...could go on.
Mendieta was a boss in La Liga, moving to Lazio finished him.
Julio Baptista, again, never special, but moving to Madrid was wrong. He was doing very well at Sevilla and had something great going.

In a way Loddar and Maradona by their antics after they retired. I try to pretend their current incarnations are in fact just the evil twins of the original legendary players.

well i don't know how the reasons look to outsiders but at least inter fans feel that way because
1) asked for a big salary increase then went on to perform like crap up until now
2) he throws tantrums like ronaldo on the pitch, except ronaldo actually puts in good performances week in week out
3) this entire situation has happened because of sneijders wish to be such a high paid player when he actually doesn't deserve it one bit
seriously sneijders play has mostly been utter garbage the past couple of seaons. if any other team out there sold such a world class player for 10m the fans would go nuts. inter fans are annoyed because we messed up and could have gotten more money for him, but the reason most of us are just "meh" is because we know he's pretty much worth 10m now because of how he's acted and performed.

Arjen Robben wouldn't even make the Netherlands all-time bench.

Re: Players who ruined their legacy
Eto'o is a big one to me.
He's refused to play for Cameroon and his countrymen hate him now (ask Nick). He's also left Inter for Russia just for the money despite being one of the best CFs in the world at his departure...
I get the money part. But refusing NT is a bit much.

Re: Players who ruined their legacy
But Etoo did return to play in the 2nd leg of the qualification tie.
And its not like he just choose not to play for the sake of it, he was unhappy with the "amateurish" set up they have.
He been playing since he was 16, more years than most, if he simply retired instead of not going I doubt anyone would of said anything.
Other players in his position have retired early.

Eto'o done everything there is to achieve in football.....
Pele, Moore, Beckenbauer, Best all went to America at the end of their careers for nothing else but to have one last pay day.... just like Eto'o has.
Don't see anyone saying they ruined their legacy.....
Eto'o was one of the best strikers in the world for about 8 years and won Serie A and La Liga as well as the CL 3 times.
Going to Russia for one final pay day before he retires does not change that.

Re: Players who ruined their legacy
It's Cameroon... of course it's amateurish. Most African NTs are run like amateurs for a lot of different reasons. If you're going to quit on an NT, you don't do it in such a crucial game. You do it at a time when the team can adjust to you not being there.
People of Cameroon nationality that i've spoken to just hate him now. Ask Nick if you don't believe me.

As i said, i understand the club part... no problem there. But his NT thing was awful. He dropped them just before a huge game when they expected him to be there. That's not how a legend acts.

But yeah did the same before that point, not coming to friendly games. Clearly its a long standing problem he has.
Its not that I dont believe you, I know Nick feels like that. But honestly, its his Nation, he isnt going to look it at from Etoo's point of view, he is going to look at it from Cameroon's.
I understand its not Etoo's proudest moment, but ruin his legacy? I dont think so.

Re: Players who ruined their legacy
Maybe but Eto'o never really had much of a legacy at international level.
His performances at international level were in stark contrast to his club performances and i don't think he had a legendary status at international level to up hold.
I understand why he did what he did ( club level) and don't blame him for it honestly and will always remember for what he was and that is probably one of the most lethal if not the most lethal 9 of his generation.

Re: Players who ruined their legacy
From what I understand, Etoo got called for a friendly some time in 11', said he dont want to go and got banned for 6 months or something.
They put him in the squad in August 12', said he aint coming because of the "amateurish" setup. They lost the first leg.
The PM of the country talked to him and got him to come back for the 2nd leg, they couldnt overturn the defeat.

Oh come on Mole. They won the Olympics with Eto'o and 2 CANs. They also got to the Confederations Cup Final. He has 53 goals for Cameroon and is the highest scorer all-time in the CAN (18 goals). He was a legend.
