Well judging who is your favorite footballer imo is not about how well they play, it is more about how they play, their personality and their attitude, that is why Marcelo is my favorite player!

Well, the best doesn't necessarily have to be your favourite player. I of course like Messi a lot too - even though I am a RM fan- but he isn't my favourite player.

I said that in the OP too.

Many have picked a player of their favourite team first of all, and then quite often not even the best one.

How boring would football be, if we all only liked Messi because he is the best?

Not to mention that your favorite player doesn’t always have to be a goalscorer.

Just think that it is funny cuz you get totally different feeling reading other threads, and since here we have to explicitly declare our fav, i think people are "scared" to do so.

Maybe i am wrong, just find it a bit non-consistent with the rest of forum threads.

Well, Messi and CR7 are currently the most high profile players in the world, that is why they'll be the most discussed.

You are not going to stir up very heated debates about some of the others mentioned, for example Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa to name two of Madrid. Doesn't mean people will only defend their favourite players.

You would notice that the posters here discuss football with in depth knowledge of the game. Hence they appreciate what other threads and the general media treat as fringe players, (would Messivista be as well known if not for Dani, Puyol, Pique, Abidal and Valdes). Hence, you would see in this forum that we favorite players from Goalkeepers to forwards. Also, you would expect someone that grew up watching legends play to like them instead of jumping to newly established stars. I think Messi is the best forward playing today, but I like midfielders and defenders more than forwards. That is where I play.

Also, players of the exposition of Messi and CR7 are more difficult to like by serious football fans just because of that, they are so advertised. You don't feel independent in liking them because the media just shoves them down your throat so much.
