Is the term "soccer" acceptable?
I think accepting the term soccer outside of the United States sends the wrong message.I mean, I don't know the particular's but looking back, what was the point of changing the name?
The sport called football in the States is one played predominantly with your arms.
I mean cultural imperialism like this is just baffling, especially when the attempted name change is such ail.

Well, it was the English who came up with the name "soccer" so I see no reason to not say it. It sure beats goals being called "Messi like"...

No it is not acceptable in my opinion.. Whoever decided to change the name is an idiot.. I heard American football was named football because all games start off with a kick

Re: Is the term "soccer" acceptable?
It's a common misconception that "soccer" was invented by the United States - that they changd the name for some reason. That's not true.
Back when the Laws of Football were being written up, football was referred to as Soccer, derived from the term "Association" (the sport is officially called Association Football, after all), because Rugby Football was the most predominant sport in the UK. It was a means of differentiating the two sports.
When football came over to the United States, they used the term "football" but "soccer" caught on. This is as far back as the early 1900's.
Both names for the sport are correct and mean the same thing. The reason why football is used more often is because Rugby isn't refereed to as Rugby Football anymore; it's now Rugby Uninon and Rugby League.

I think it's worth making fun of every couple of months, but other than that, it's not like they actually changed the name, the "association football" origin has been well explained here.
Doesn't change the fact that American Football is a silly, silly game.

I don't get annoyed by the name but its just a weird feeling, really. Whenever I'm here, I just have to get used to calling it that way just to at least get my point across LOL.

Re: Is the term "soccer" acceptable?
Even though the name "American Football" isn't quite an accurate description of the sport, the sport itself did derive from Rugby Football. So perhaps that is why it is known as American Football.

Well, while Rugby might have it's flaws, it doesn't mainly consist of commercials, and the players don't think it's necessariy to wear body armour, also I'm pretty sure they're breeding NFL players in some kind of underground dungeon by crossing human beings with buffalo or something, people shouldn't be that f*cking big.

I am not Am Football expert but i highly disagree with that assessment. It's a different game, but it's just as fun in my opinion when you get into it.

Re: Is the term "soccer" acceptable?
I never understood the controversy over this. It's called different things in different places, it's not like football/soccer are the only names around the world. I mean, it's freaking "calcio" in Italian (maybe I'm missing some etymological connection with "foot," but the point still stands) and various other terms in other languages. Unsure why anyone should give a s***, it's still the same game.

Yeah, I am. Is it a stereotype of Americans to not get worked up over something as silly as semantics? I missed that one.

The thing is,in America football is not primary and there are things like baseball and handegg. When a non-footballing country renames your sport of course it isn't gonna sound natural...
Also,in Italy they don't call fishing football,or whatever it is they do over there.
