Cruyff: Xavi is better than Messi

Barcelona hero Johan Cruyff claims Xavi Hernandez is the best player in the world, ahead of his star team-mate Lionel Messi.
Argentina international Messi is regarded by many to be the finest footballer of his generation.
Despite acknowledging Messi's brilliance, Cruyff feels the play-making ability of Xavi puts him marginally ahead of the triple Ballon d'Or winner.
"The best player in the world does not exist because there are many different positions," Cruyff told ESPN.
"There are spectacular players like Messi. But if you see a guy like Xavi, who controls the ball and manages the pace of the game, he is also a great player, but totally different from Messi."
"It is very hard to tell who is the best. (In my eyes) the most spectacular is Messi, but the best is Xavi."

This is an old quote, I believe he said this a month ago. Cruyff is football's smartest mind so he very well might be correct. The claims in the other Xavi thread that he's easily replaceable for Spain are completely ludicrous.

Anyways, I find that most people only listen to fragments of what Cruyff has to say. Back when he ran a weekly column for the Periodico de Catalunya he would give ample justification for his statements and the media would only pick up on the lines that were the most controversial, I vbelieve this has given him a bad reputation. I suggest people listen when he speaks, because he is usually quite spot on.

I can see why cruyff would go for the tactically smart player. But still, messi has far more match winning (and technical) qualities, that makes him not just more "spectacular", but better as well. Im guessing cruyff is just trying to sound cool and different to everyone else.
