How about this? By playing El Shaarawy as a LM, Italy could make use of his defensive and attackin skills.

Barzagli - Bonucci - Chiellini
Maggio - De Rossi - Pirlo - Marchisio - El Shaarawy
Giaccherrini - Gilardino

Well it's more obvious than ever that a back 3 system is infinitely better than a back 4 system for the personel in the National team.

What a vast improvement. Well done Italia, with a more clinical striker the match could have been wrapped up.

Where do you see this going now formation wise? Will Prandelli stick with 3 at the back formation? Or will it only be used against certain opponents?

If he doesn't stick to the back 3 for the forseeable future then he's making a big mistake

Let's look at Italia with a 3 man back line

Draw 1-1 Vs Spain in groups. Looked dangerous

Qualified from groups, dominated matches

Draw 0-0 with Spain, lack of a finisher cost Italia big time.

Without?

Disgraceful defence, concede 7 in 2 games, barely beat Japan

Lose 3-0 to Russia

etc etc.

I would like to say one thing, #RESPCT to Candreva. For me, he should 100% be in the starting 11 no matter what formation we choose to play.

Candreva deserves credit for his performances in this cup. Been brilliant, especially vs Spain. Was tireless the whole tourney

The 3 man backline must stay for the World Cup. That's more important than any one individual.

If Candreva can fit in, that's fine. However, we can't really build a formation around him at the expense of the defence.

Play the exact same formation as we did against Spain and Candreva fits in perfectly.

With Montolivo(suspended), Balotelli(suspended), De Sciglio(injury) and Marchisio(injury) out next match I'd go with this line-up. Without Barzagli I would not play a 3-back which rules out Bonucci.

If we are talking about the world cup and players that I would bring, I'd revive Totti and pair him with Balotelli. I honestly think they would make a devastating partnership. If not, SES and Rossi to battle for that spot.

The game against Bulgaria was almost a disaster. Buffon saved Italy.. which means that Italy was almost beaten by Bulgaria at home. That midfield isnt good enough, also, I have never had trust in Maggio and all those LB when it comes to defending.

Midfield lacks a tough, dominant DMF. DDR is more of a utility player, Pirlo the creator. We need another Gattuso. Also, when DDR plays in defense today, the midfield is Pirlo-Montolivo. Thats looks very vulnerable in the middle
