PlayStation Orbis (PS4) Empty PlayStation Orbis (PS4)

Post by RealGunner Wed Mar 28, 2012 5:29 pm

A tipster has told Kotaku that the PlayStation 4 is named "Orbis,"

the Orbis will ship during holiday 2013, according to the tipster. This person says Sony has sent "select developers" Orbis dev kits since the beginning of the year. "Improved" iterations of these kits were reportedly dispatched earlier this month, with "finalized beta units" headed to developers at the end of 2012.

The site is reporting that developers are being told to plan for an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU, the latter of which is capable of running Orbis titles at a resolution of 4096x2160 and 3D games at 1080p. It has been previously suggested that the next-generation PlayStation would be powered by AMD technology.

The PS4 should be released before the Xbox4, I remember Sony lost a lot of business because of the delay in the release of the PS3, when the PS2 was the most popular system in terms of volume sold.

my ps3 just died two weeks ago too

i doubt that game developers have pushed anywhere close to the max of the current generation systems, but i guess they just have to keep coming out with new ones for the hell of it...

i thought sony has said it many times that they won't be releasing another console for another few years....

they might bump up a few specs next year but a new one won't be coming until atleast '14.... and if the specs are to be believed they are talking about 4k resolution which sony just announced for their top end projectors and blue ray players and won't be released till december.

Not really, those specs will be 3 years old time 2013 comes around.

And imalegend it was always going to released soon, one thing console hardware is terribly out of date most phones have more RAM ffs and also they cant let Microsoft or Nintendo have new hardware and keep pushing the PS3.

It's just stupid.

Can you tech savy people explain how much more powerful the X64 is than the PS3?

If it will be 3 years old in 2013 what's the point? Why not release the latest shit from 2013?

Well it was made in 2010 compared to the specs of PS3 which was specifically made from the ground up and designed for the PS3, but it was made in 2006.

So it will still be a crap tonne more powerful as iam sure the new Xbox will but quite frankly id expect and up to date machine when he gets released.......

Console cycles are long enough but to release 3 year old hardware on top of that is silly imo and i dont expect it.

These are rumours for a reason and i expect the specs to to be using something closer to this year than 2010 if iam honest.

It's also a name loaded with meaning. The word "Orbis" itself, from Latin, means circle, or ring, or even orbit. Not terribly helpful. Combine it with the name of Sony's new handheld system, though, and you have the common term Orbis Vita (or, in strict Latin, Orbis Vitae). Which means "The circle of life". Could the Vita be playing a very important role in the development and use of the next PlayStation home console? Maybe!

My worry is not so much for the console but for the developer since the cost of producing games went up so much in the last generation. As long as development costs are not excessive, and the console is easy to develop for then i'm not really worried about the technical specs.

i think they are going for better resolutions this time...they might put 4k resolution in it.

if you guys don't know what 4k resolution is try this youtube on orignal....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0m1XmvBey8

majority of people will see alot of lagg.... 4k Resolution is used in RedOne Cameras

and most likely they will have a cross platform gaming like Wii-U does atm with the Vita...portable and console

and recently Sony filled for a kinect type patent, so they will be going towards full motion gaming too, no more PS move

PC gaming is stagnating because of consoles Sad. That hardware is so frakking old. I only have to replace my video card every 3 years now instead of every year like it was before :vagi:

I guess I'm spoilt or something, but games nowadays just don't have that "whoa" factor anymore. I want photorealistic graphics and 100 thousand man battles.

lol 4k resolution my ass... consoles have massive overheating issues as it is, good luck having your graphics card not catch fire when processing textures in a resolution that huge

Because smart phones are more powerful than the current generation of consoles lol.......

Theres an urgent need from a developing stand point for new consoles......

I dont know about the Spec's but when the console comes out be it Playstation or Xbox the specs shouldnt be a year older than when the console releases.

For example if it comes out in 2013 the GFX card being used should be one from this year in the very least.

Like Nichabr said i dont trust anything until i see confirmed specs i would be very suprised if they use specs from 2010.

The source is Kotaku who are pretty reliable and you can pretty much consider the name finalized. Unless Sony are being master trolls by making http://orbis.scedev.net/ available but not http://ps4.scedev.net/

Only thing I really care about are the Xbox specs because that's what's going to be ported to PC. (One of the reasons for Xbox's existence, it was the DirectX box)

As for people complaining about the specs - console specs are always inferior to Mid-High end PC's of the time of their release. It's why they're so cheap. (In case people don't know, the GPU will be based on the ATI/AMD's being rolled out now, the HD7xxx series which would easily handle todays game engines at Quad HD) Hell I'm pretty sure my 275GTX could run todays console ports at 4k (unplayable fps though since thats essentially an x16 workload) and as for RAM/VRAM. While the VRAM is the most annoying feature of the current gen, limiting texture map sizes drastically, you don't need that much RAM on a console anyway...

AMD x64 could mean anything. The only info you can get from that is that it's a 64bit processor from AMD. Congratulations, you could've guessed that after Sony pulled out of the Cell project 4-5 years ago.
