What a joke!

Steps to becoming England captain.

1. Earn just over 10 caps in 9 years.
2. Get relegated.
3. Get sent off for making a stupid challenge in the game before your next international.
4. Move to a delusional London club and don't get made captain.

So to sum up, you get made England captain for hardly ever playing, getting sent off in a derby and getting relegated with West Ham. Gerrard is captain for Liverpool and yet Parker gets picker over him!? He isn't even Spurs captain!

No wonder we haven't beaten Holland in 16 years if we make stupid decisions like this before the games.

It's the equivalent of Spain stripping Casillas of captaincy and then giving it to Javi Martinez over Puyol or Xavi.

On an unrelated note the new FIFA Street is possibly the worst sports game I've ever played. At least it might get all the skill spamming dickheads off of FIFA 12.

It's not a big deal anyway, quite often captain is needed for nothing during a game.

Joe Hart should have been named captain. 'nuff said.

It should of been Gerrard IMO.

Just a friendly game. Nothing special. It will change once there is a proper coach.

Has England's line-up for the friendly been confirmed? There's always the chance that Gerrard won't start after the final went through extra time and he inevitably celebrated the trophy.

This is a joke. Seriously...? Parker? He has 9 caps in 10 years, and I don't believe he's ever captained a team for a prolonged period. He captained Spuds once earlier this season (I believe) and he was captain for Newcastle a while back, but I don't know for how long.

I know this is merely for this fixture, and the new manager will most likely select his own captain. However, I can't understand selecting him over some other options. *cough* Gerrard *cough* I will be interested to see the squad chosen for this match, as I can see that having a strong impact on Parker's selection as captain.

I never heard anybody say anything like that. The captaincy is very important, he's supposed to be a leader, to set an example to other players on the pitch. So to give it somebody who rarely plays for the country, isn't that good anyway, has on the pitch disciplinary problems and to somebody who isn't even captain for his club is stupid. Only a manager nicknamed 'pyscho' could make this bad of a decision, or 'Arry but that's just because he's a twat.

when they call up downing for doing absolutely nothing , i dont see why they kick up a big fuss over whos captain when they got non - performing players in the squad

A nice little bit of calculated thinking; keeping the armband with an elder statesman who has been around the block a few times and can provide adequate direction for the youngsters, all the while keeping it away from one of the members of the Lolden Generation (Rio, Lamps, etc) who haven't cut mustard in international competition and you're going to phase out of the squad soon enough.

Can't say I dislike it.

I've seen the reports saying that he was, but I'm pretty sure that Matthew Upson was the captain. Parker may have filled in on occasion.

You're not wrong. Downing has disappeared for the majority of the Liverpool season, but he's been decent playing for England. Moreover, did you watch the League Cup Final? Downing finally showed his real class. The potential is there. I can understand Pearce wanting a look at him against the England backdrop.
