The Franchise wrote:Of course, they were not bums. But for me, Holland played better, more technical and more controlling.
To me Holland let them in the game rather than Germany taking it from them.
At the end of the day they lost, Germany were favourites pre tournament anyways so nothing changed. I'm glad the dutch lost tbh, the arrogance was stupid, another instance of politics getting invloved with football, one of the players even said that we wanted to humiliate them. Germany got oissed off and put a battering ram through total football, the dutch lost control and lost their heads. Football is a mental game as Zelous said, they were clearly not right in the head, this same Germany team won the Euros so, yes, they weren't bums and were rightfully champions.

I see, damn roller coaster ride of a national career.Zealous wrote:barca 2011 wrote:But he played for like 3 NTs no? What's the story on that?EarlyPrototype wrote:Di Stefano not achieving success internationally.
Long story short:
Argentina refused to participate in what would have been his first world cup.
He missed what would've been his second through injury.
Mass footballer strikes in Argentina forced Di Stefano to migrate to Columbia to make a living. Problem was Colombia wasn't recognised by FIFA. Missed what would've been his third.
Moved to Spain.
Became Spanish national when he was probably past his prime. Spain didn't qualify for what would've been his last world cup.
I recalling these off the top of my head, so I could be wrong with the order/details but it was something like that.

Re: Biggest disappointment in football.
Okay, but that doesnt make any of what I said wrong. Holland changed football and a WC would of stamped that well. For someone who enjoyed seeing it, it was a disappointing they didnt get it.
I think your reading too much into one game btw. Teams take their foot off the gas all the time and if your trying to show a team up like they were to Germany, you run the risk. That doesnt make them lesser players or a lesser team.

Re: Biggest disappointment in football.
Yea they were a great team, but they weren't doing anything new tbh. Ajax were doing everything they were doing for almost 5+ years. I suppose back then the WC got a lot more exposure than club football. Germany has a habit of being near the finals or winning it. They are ruthless!

Re: Biggest disappointment in football.
We f*cked up in 2004/2005 it must be said. Getting knocked out in 2003/2004 was a tad harsh as well considering a missed penalty denied us in the end.

Re: Biggest disappointment in football.
Well Buffon is 34 now but it would really a big dissapointment if one of the greatest goalkeepers doesnt win CL in his career.Especially considering how close he came to winning it.
Dont think we'll win it in the next 3-4 years(which i think Buffon would probably last) but one can dream.

Re: Biggest disappointment in football.
dont really like chelsea or something
but chelsea losing out in moscow
and conceding that last minute goal , which broke a lot of hearts plus the groundwork which had already been laid down by mr ovrebo.. imo they wouldve beaten united had they been in the final

Re: Biggest disappointment in football.
Schalke 04 losing the BL Championship in 2001. They lost out to a goal by Bayern that was scored in the 3rd minute of injury time in the very last match of that season. Ever since then, Schalke are known as "Champions of the Hearts".

Re: Biggest disappointment in football.
One minor* slip up which caused lots of flack for Spain was the 2009 Confederations Cup. IDK if it belongs in a thread talking about almost-greats but when you consider the potential Spain had to cement a record, they *bleep* up!!!! It could have been only the 2nd NT treble and it was much deserved, but they lost to USA of all f'ing teams and to top it off, they would have beaten 1970s Brazil NT record of wins had they won.
*= WTF????
